I was cruzing around some of the groups and came across your image. Great Photo of the Merganser, in focus and nice crop. The background was rather bright to me and I wondered what it would look like a little darker. |

Cindy, you did a great job with this photograph. Tack sharp through-out. The color and shadows give the photo depth. The light house may be slightly overexposed. I agree with Alan that you may have elected to focus more on the lighthouse complex. When composing my shot, I alway try to get a little extra margins around my subject to allow for more flexability with post proccesing. In this case I used AI expansion in Photoshop to add to the right side of the photo. |

Thanks for all your positive comments. This photograph was a challange to post procces. The chick had plumage that was well adapted to its habitat. And as some of you have pointed out there were many ways to bring attention to this little guy and they all help in refineing my future post proccesing. Thanks to my 800mm lens and the Z8's high resolution sensor, there was a lot of data to work with. Here is the original. |

Peter, I think this forum is great for getting ideas on improving photography in general, not just our best. As a long time flight instructor, I had found the people learn a lot more from a poor landing than a perfect one! |

Great focus! And a nice action shot. I like the yellow flowers complimenting the birds beak. This is one time where maybe getting a shot from a higher angle my have helped in getting some view of the pray. My copy put a inverse radial gradient around the bird lowering the exposure some to pull the eye a little more to the subject. |

Butch, while the "alligator farm" has a huge amount of nesting birds, I have found it one of the hardest places to photograph. Most of the birds are white, there is mostly patchy sunlight and the only clear background is up high. You did get a great photograph of the Egret, good focus and did not blow out the whites (not easy). My only comment would be that the bright branch on the bottom, the light on the feathers mid-body and head all compete for the viewers attention. I thried to lower the exposure on the the bottom two and left the head exposure alone, maybe drawing the eye to one place. |

Peter, you're photograph is nice and sharp and I like the crop. I did think the "rotten apple" drew too much attention from the bird. My take reduced the exposure on the apple stuff and increased it on the bird. I tried to work on the background but there were artifacts hiddin in there. |

This is a great backlight photograph with nice warm colors. The fog over the water tells me the story of the bird just getting started on its day. I thought it may lack some depth, so I lightened the bird and lowered the exposure on some of the background. |

Jeremy, This image defines the idea of telling a story in a photograph. You also did a good job of minimizing the highlights and distractions that were present. My take on post processing was to do a lot of local exposure reduction, leaving the colors a little cooler and a little larger crop. As for staying in the "nature" category, the PSA Digital Dialogue for "Birds" definition is: "Instead of the restrictive PSA rules presenting nature, these images of birds may show the "hand of man." Birds at zoos and game farms, scenes with a fence, and other images not allowed in the Nature Division can be presented in this group with as much editing as one wishes, no restrictions, as long as the theme is of nature." So, in this venue, you have the freedom to explore more post proccesing if you wish. |
