Cindy this is a wonderful photograph, your focus is spot on, giving great texture and a nice blured background. I thought that by cropping a little more, darkening the background and reducing the highlights on the front of the frog may increase those attributes. Good job! |

Obviously the "lighting bolt" was made in jest! I agree in your principle of bringing to light what we see as the most meaningul part of our subjects. I always enjoy and admire your perspective in photography as well as all our other contributors. |

Peter, I think we are sometimes working at the limits of what our equipment is capable of. Optimizing camera settings, stalking subjects and perseverance is what makes getting a great photograph so rewarding! |

Wow, I did not know that cropping stuff out was not allowed in some competitions! Thanks for the info. |

Thank you all for the kind comments. I am really working on getting away from "bird portraits". I try to avoid caged animals and intended on doing some macro photography with friends in this garden. The light was shadowy with lots of bright sun patches and the birds were all scrambling over food. After lots of study, I isolated this image (the bird's body in the background does not belong to the head!) |

Great shot Butch. I think your crop is great. I also think you could make a second photograph of just the head and neck. Some possible minor suggestions, slightly reduce the highlights on the upper bill, the neck and legs. Remove a little of the tree on the lower right. How about a little clouds and lightning strike in the background! |

I will add my congratulations to a fantastic shot. I will also add to the comments above that your crop is great. I know a lot of comments are oreinted towards competitions, but I feel that tends to drive photographers to a stereotype image. Follow the rules, yes, second guess the judges/jury not so much. |

As noted above, a great shot and I agree with those comments. I also give you praise for the color and crop, well done. I also think that the sharpness is an issue. With my Nikon Z7II and Z8 I have a tough time getting great results with ISOs above 2000. As you have mentioned, I learn a great deal about my subjects through the superb images our equipment can capture. |

Deborah, let me add my welcome to you. As noted above this is a great action shot. I also agree that the cropped version draws more attention to the birds. Dr Ernoe, not sure what details Butch removed, other than to crop more? I do like his less exposed image. |
