When it comes to rule interpretation I like to "beg for forgiveness". I like to focus on making the image enrichening so that the viewer has a never before view or insight of the subject. The rules, I believe are to keep the image
honest, which I totally agree! |

From PSA "Nature": "No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping
are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without
changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the
original scene, are permitted" So in the "Nature" category I believe it is permissible to mask and adjust exposure / temp (I use this to move the brown water to a more blue) / texture. I do not use these to extent of removing items from view. I even mask the eye to increase the exposure slightly. I hope that others will add their opinion. |

You are right, a smaller aperture might have been better for this shot. However, I only had 1 hour in the blind, shooting out of small portholes with birds 2 to 30 feet away and changing light conditions. Most of the puffins flew directly into their burrows between the rocks. This one was only on the rock for about 10 seconds. So, I set up with f/5.6 1/2500 sec "highlighted weighted" metering and "floating" ISO and only made changes to the 200-500 zoom and hoped for the best! I took over 1,000 pics and ended up with about 80, I think great shots. Cannot wait to get into that predicament again! |

I often dislike cropping out something and the crop often changes the way our photos are perceived. It this case I think each photo gives a different perspective and yes it is a great photograph! |

Great focus, eye glint really draws attention. I sometimes like to place the subject off center to add a little story "I am looking to fly off that way" |

Really good photo, especially with a 400mm lens! I tried darkening the sky a little to put more emphasis on the subject. Let me know what you think. |

Wonderful shot. I am amazed that the bird is so sharp at 1/20 sec. which really softens the water. I cropped the image some to see how the bird looked off center, what do you think? |

Very nice crop and great focus. I sometimes darken and shade the background a little to bring out the subject. I also increased the exposure a slight bit on the eye |

Great shot, I always like to shorebirds in trees. You might consider a little more cropping. |

There is only one US company and they take 15 folks once a day. See https://www.boldcoast.com/. Last year they opened reservations on March 5 at 09:00. I started my reservation as soon as they opened, but they sold out by the time I got my credit card info inputted. I watched their reservation Calander and picked up two days that others CX. It is a good idea to book more than one day as they often do not land or cancel because of weather. You are only on the Island in a blind for just over an hour, but I got thousands of photos. Spent all of July in Maine and these where my best days. |
