Beautiful shot, Leslie. I used to see Swallowtails and Monarchs frequently in Sacramento when I was growing up, but, sadly, I haven't seen either in years. Thanks for sharing. People need to be reminded of how fragile and fleeting nature's beauty can be. I agree with Sherry--you caught this one perfectly. |

First, congratulations on your award, Judy! Where I live in California, we have many sunflower growers and thus many fields of these very photogenic plants. Nice job on the sunburst. This is an inherently contrasty scene, so auto ISO is going to react to wherever you focus is. Manual may have been better. 4500 may have been too high. My suggestion is to shoot to preserve the highlights and then bring up the shadow detail in post. Always let your histogram be your guide (but you know that). Your processed image lacks some needed contrast. Experiment with the curve slider to see if you like the results better. I have found that the presets are frequently all you need to do to achieve that goal. |

Very nice, Peter. Love the tension between these two monkeys. Very evocative of the way humans interact, sadly, sometimes. Technically, I agree with Sherry and Leslie. A little color correction would elevate this image. |

I applaud the knowledge all the bird people in this group possess. I'm learning a lot from you. I think it's helpful to understand animal behavior so you can visualize your shots. Sounds like this tern is a tricky one to capture, but you did an outstanding job, Sarita. I love the clean composition with the muted colors as background resulting from the shallow DOF. I would agree with Leslie's suggestion to lighten the eye just a tad. Nonetheless, this is a five-star shot. Great job. |

Nice photo, Sherry. I agree with everything Leslie said about this photo. In addition, I like the way the backlight helps to accentuate detail in the hummer's wings. The only thing I would suggest is a crop. The stem and leaf above the cluster of flowers adds nothing to your composition and is perhaps a little distracting. Experiment with different aspect ratios to see what you like. Very nice, nonetheless. |
