94 Feb 25 Comment "Interesting" was the first thought that entered my mind when I first looked at this shot. I agree with, Gwen. Kudos for selecting a subject that most of us probably never knew existed. Sharp focus. Good composition. Balanced with enough background to get a sense of what its habitat is like. Excellent shot, Leslie! Feb 11th
94 Feb 25 Comment I like this shot, Judy, and I really appreciate the background you provided. Human encroachment into wildlife habitat has adversely affected many species. I was a little surprised, though, since California, at least the Central Valley, has a lot of scrub jays--an evolutionary cousin, though. In fact, they are the most abundant bird in my backyard. I will have a new appreciation for them now. Nice composition with good DOF. Appreciate the ruffled "rousing" feather moment. The only distracting part is the dried up vine going across the feathers mid-bird. Not much you can do about that. I don't mind that this bird was banded. In fact, that adds another element to the story. It's probably been banded by your local wildlife agency for the reasons you cited in your explanation--they are a protected species. That adds context. Great job! Feb 11th
94 Feb 25 Comment I love this photo, Gwen. I think you captured this egret's antics delightfully. The first thing that struck me was just how well all the blue tones work together. Almost a pastel feel. I didn't even notice the eye not being visible. Since the bird has its head slightly cocked to one side, it isn't detracting at all. In fact, because the feathers on the neck are in sharp focus, it seems like you had the overall DOF just right. The composition is clean and uncluttered. Very nice, indeed. Feb 11th
94 Feb 25 Comment I really like this photo, Sarita. These burrowing owls are very charismatic and you caught them at just the right moment. Makes me wonder what they were thinking. I have two minor suggestions. First, there needs to be separation between the owl on the right and the blade of brown grass. It's a bit distracting and could probably be cloned out fairly easily. Also, I would be inclined to crop out more from the bottom of the photo since it's out of your DOF. Leave the top alone. Still, a very nice image with a lot of character. Feb 11th
94 Feb 25 Comment Very nice, Sherry. I agree with the other comments. Great exposure, lots of crisp detail (including the water droplets). The tern stands out well against the dark background. One very minor suggestion would be to add a tad of exposure to the eye area. Not much, just a little to make it more discernible. Overall, an excellent image, and I agree that you must have a great deal of patience! Feb 11th
