Wow! I am so impressed!
I think it's a toss-up between the original and the crop. In the original the black hole disappears but you lose the impact of the water drops. In the crop you get such detail in the subject (look at the eyes on the one on the left!) but you introduce problems with the black hole and the environmental loss. Pick your pleasure, they are both amazing images IMO.
Whenever I see images like this I imagine a third, unseen child, "Mooooommm! The children are fighting again!" |

"If it isn't one thing it's another" <---- famous quote from Roseanne Roseannadanna (back in the glory days of SNL).
Hummingbirds don't eat bees, but not sure if the bees know that. But the birds are wary of bees, because a sting could be fatal to their tiny bodies. So, I guess this is a case of being mutually wary, and waiting for that close encounter would be futile. Dang!
Still, it's nice and sharp (I'm trying to learn the difference between sharp and oversharp) and does indeed show the two species carefully checking each other out. I would have liked less space between them, too, but to quote a musical philosopher from those crazy '70s, "You can't always get what you want." But it's a nice shot nonetheless. :-)

Ha ha Cindy, that was my thought too. Or this one, from "Uptown Funk:" ...gotta kiss myself, I'm so pretty!"
Although the images of the reddish egrets doing their dance are amazing, this one that captures a quiet moment of reflection (ha ha) is intriguing. You were in the right place at the right time, when this reddish fellow was taking a break.
Wow, -0.7 exposure comp? The sun must have been reallyreallyREALLY bright that day!

Well, you'll always get an "I like it!" from me :-) Sometimes these birds (and backgrounds) just don't behave the way we want them to. And those pesky green herons love to hide in the dark swampy underbrush, which makes for some split-second decisions -- with no retakes. Silly birds!
When I enlarge the photo I do see more wing blur. . .but to these uneducated eyes I always wonder if that is an intentional slow shutter to emphasize motion.
Matt K -- Is that Matt Kloskowski? The PS guru (well, to me he is) :-)
Richard, I'm glad you mentioned the light sections of water between the birds legs. I get this when I use layers to try to separate the subject from the background in PS. Drives me absolutely nuts! (just another reason I am thinking of abandoning PS in favor of a more stable, workable program.

The water adds a great touch to an already beautiful image.
Poor little fish, it looks resigned to its fate :-) |

Wow.
Just wow.
It may have a "busy" background, but it took a while for me to even notice it. The birds are just gorgeous, and you did a fine job in capturing something very special. I would hang that on my wall in a heartbeat! |

PS Now, here's a very saturated blue pigeon (I was surprised to learn it's a pigeon!). I swear I didn't touch the saturation slider. . . |

Sorry, I've been AWOL because I've been playing with Photoshop, who really doesn't know how to play nice. Every time I open it, I get an error. I've been on the phone with India countless times, I've uninstalled and reinstalled it just as many times, and today it worked long enough for me to take the advice offered here and re-do the jpg.
I'm sad that IT removed my very clever title: " 'Chu lookin' at, buddy" :-)
Sheesh.
Anyway, I hope this is better. I didn't touch the saturation or the color tools, but I did reposition the crop to give "Little Kathleen" :-) more room to "spin." I also re-did the branch plus two little white areas near her head.
Overprocessing. . .from reading on the 'net, I understand it is an unnatural appearance and/or the appearance of a halo around the subject. Yeah, maybe it was too blue (I like blue!), but I think I avoided the halo thing. Is there somethine else I am missing when I post process?
If I give up on PS (according to India I have all the right stuff on my computer i7, Nvidia GeForce, lots of hard-drive space) is there another program I should look into?
Thanks for all your help!!!!! |
