Ha ha, I can hear that voice, too! I frequently look through Gordon Laing's boo ("In Camera") for inspiration, but I still need a lot of practice. |

What a balancing act! I find these guys quite annoying (no wonder 4 and 20 were baked in a pie), but they are challenging (for me) to get good feather detail with all that blackness.
Maybe it's my newbie ignorance showing again, but I don't find the background all that distracting. Mr Blackbird is perfectly poised on his perch (say THAT 3 x fast!), and maybe I would photoshop out that long stem to the left, the one that is almost in focus (that's a bit distracting as the rest all match the blurriness of the background).
Your original, even though the second one is out of focus, is interesting. Mr. Subject Blackbird appears to be trying to convince Mr. Blurry Blackbird of something that he just wasn't interested in hearing :-)

Mergansers always look like they are on the verge of having a bad hair day. . .
I like the Bud's idea of adding the fog, but I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to do it. I kinda like the original in that the colors are a bit more intense. But both are worthwhile shots and tell a story of the long, wet road ahead for these ducks. |

You can hang that image on one of my walls, Richard! :-)
I like how you sort of created your own bokeh with the tweaks that you did to the background. Not outlandishly blurry bokeh, but enough to lessen its effect on that lovely spoonbill.
My problem is that when I keep my yucky shots around to percolate. . . they don't. Must be my computer :-) |

If it's a dramatic photo, it's got to be Larry's :-) Everything about it is just perfect.
I want to be you when I grow up :-)

I love it! I saw one running across the road (smirk) when I visited Texas once, but this was a long time ago, before I discovered cameras.
I see what the others mean about the tumbleweed diminishing the bird on the right, but we are nature photographers capturing nature in action and that iw exactly what you did in a detailed and beautifully exposed image. I do believe it was quite rude of them not to move away to a more favorable position, though! |

Ah,I travel the world vicariously! That is an amazing subject and an amazing capture! The little tiny white spot doesn't bother me nor does the dappled light, because the unusual subject is in fine detail.
I compared your original with what you posted. Now that I've seen what Topaz can do, I think I'll save all my Diet Coke bottle returns to see if it is something I can afford in this lifetime! |

I have another in this series where Mr. Eagle is smacking Mrs. Eagle in the eye with his wing tip. She protested vigorously! But that one is suitable for an oops page, not this one, because it hides her eye.

I'm so pleased you called me Cindy -- her work is so much better than mine! :-)

Thank you, everyone! I'm so thrilled to get such feedback from this honored group!
Im really glad I took the PS course, I learned a lot about using it to improve my photos. One think I learned is that there is an ACR filter -- which simply takes you back to the Adobe Camera Raw part of the PS suite. I will see if the clarity slider can be pushed up a little more. I did try to increase the yellow, but I was timid. . .this time, I will be more daring to see if it improves things.
PS Let me apologize for being MIA last month. There were a few surgical complications that kept me down longer than I thought they would. But, like a bad penny, I'm baaaaack! :-) |
