Thanks. I already like Cundy's version -- I like how the bird stands out from the background (when I tried it, it looke blah). But I will play some more
Thanks again! |

That's where my (untrained) eye went -- I followed the mid-placed "arrow" right to the lighted tree on the left, which is kind of framed by the shorter, lower line of trees that leads to the upper longer line.
Sometimes I am so worried about "subject" that I forget it doesn't necesarily have to be a thing, it can be a design of light, shadow, and pattern. This image is a good reminder of the artistry of the photographer and not just the technology of the gear. |

Wow! It's really a starkly beautiful image!
I'm not sure if I could do what you did in post, but it certainly worked. There is a 3D quality about this owl-and-his-background that is quite beautiful.
I get the impression that he wants to ask you " 'Chu looking at. . ." |

I'm always a little amazed that you guys, with your expert skills and photographic magic, let me hang around here. Mom (or dad) and baby are always perfect subjects for a portrait and for hanging on the wall :-) Contests are nice, and all that, but a good photo deserves to be appreciated regardless of whether it's prize material.
I did notice the upslope, but I also noticed that much of the taller background grasses are pretty much perpendicular, as is baby. Mom not so much, so maybe a little un-tilt to the right, just a little bit. |

Another stunning capture that I'm afraid I can only dream about at this point. I have no problem waiting, though, as long as I can admire yours :-)
Wondering how many pairs of fierce alligator eyes were lurking in the darkness watching you work. . .I suppose it's just as well that you can't see them! (is there such a thing as alligator spray??)
When I was in central Florida last year, I think it was in the spring, I was attacked by hordes of no-see-ums. So tiny that you don't know you've been attacked until you get back to the hotel and the itching becomes unbearable! I think I still have scars from some of the bites. This occurred near a canal where there were some snail kites picking up dinner. If any of my shots are decent, I might post them before Oct 2 rolls around. |

Another amazing photo -- in an amazing country. I have a friend in Brisbane who keeps inviting me to visit, but I've seen the size of the spiders and snakes. . . ewww.
I see the eyes on the first two birds and maybe the nictitating membrane on the third. The other two should be ashamed of themselves for not cooperating :-) I don't mind so much sky, the contrast of the colors is what captured my attention, not the empty space. The guano didbn't bother me, either -- clearly this is a favored resting spot for these little guys.
Sheesh, I better take Larry's class on how to view photographs! Until then, I think this is a very pleasing capture. |

I am so impressed with this photo! I never saw one of these animals before, and this (to me) is just stunning. The DOF is perfect, and the colors are amazing! |

Sorry for the delay in commenting. Still sick, and until now all the MD had was "the concept" of a plan :-) (they've been trying to avoid surgery since I have a bad surgical history, but I also have stones in the gallbladder and the ducts -- what a mess!) But the concept has developed into a plan, which should begin on October 2. So, I may be awol for a bit while the MDs work their magic.
I really didn't like this image. I was impressed with how tightly the Z9 will take a crop without losing sharpness, and I was pleased that I managed to hold everything still while I squeezed the shutter button. And kinda intrigued by this little guy who stuck around long enough to glean the last of the weed seeds. But the white sky, not so much. Cindy and Bud both posted a nice alternative, so I will play around with the image a bit more. Actually, I thought I would like Bud's crop better what with the grayish background, but I think I actually prefer Cindy's white sky.
I don't know how to oversharpen, how do you do that? I b etter learn, because plastic is never any good!
Larry, I'm gonna try your suggestion as soon as I can! I do have feeders, but they are *feeders*. . . and your suggestions seem more naturally inspired. I do think I've earned mtyself a trip to somewhere warm this winter and am doing my best to save. . .my Expedia account has $1.63 in it already! :-)
Thank you, everyone, for your comments (and your patience, this has been a rather yucky month). |
