Thanks Maria. I see now what you have described about how a judge might look at the image. I actually have the image with the rest of the limb so I can expand the composition a bit and also do some select editing on the white areas as possible. After I do that, I'll try it in another competition and see what happens. Thanks again. |

Thanks Xiao. I agree with your comments relative to the background however since I want to use this in competitions, PSA nature rules will not permit me to darken or blur the background to make it less obvious. |

Thanks Marilyn. I try to go to Blue Cypress at least once a year. I tried to make the fish stand out more, but was also unsuccessful. Wish I'd seen him a little sooner before so much of the fish was gone. |

The couple that owns and runs the rental cabins will take you out. They were charging $100/hr for the boat which will hold 5. |

Hi Richard - thanks so much for your comments. The original image does have a bit more surroundings and I will try a crop that uses them. Also thanks for spotting the noise. If you're ever in Florida, Blue Cypress Lake has over 600 Osprey nests and is a great place to shoot, albeit only in a boat. |

Hi Marilyn - Wonderful editing job! I've had some images with the same concern as you have expressed. You might try using your select tool for the areas you want to lighten, then in PS use the Brightness/Contrast adjustment to carefully lighten the area. Once you start seeing a border to the area, back off just a little. You may have to go through this process more than once, flattening the image after each time. Here's my attempt. |

Hi Xiao - very nice composition. I think your image is just fine without any changes. That said, you might try removing the green on the right edge to see if that helps in any way. Nicely done! |

Hi Richard - Even with the large crop you were able to maintain good detail and noise control. Nicely done! I'd like to see just a tiny little more exposure to lighten the dark areas of the bird. I think this would bring more attention to your subject. I really do like how the background around the bird highlights acts as a frame. |

Hi Maria - nice image with good story telling and wonderful color. My only suggestion would be to crop the image on the right side and top to more emphasize the subjects, but not enough to delete all of the cloud. I really like the detail in the birds. |

I would take Frans' cropping another small step and crop a bit of the top in order to keep close to the original ratio. Love the action. Great capture Dan. |

Hi LC. My first reaction was to smile at the bird's expression and stance. Given that I'm not familiar with the bird's behavior, I have to agree that it looks drunk. I would like to see more color separation between the bird and background. Perhaps lighten the background or slightly change the tint?
BTW, I see you use Topaz products which I also use. What's your impression of their Photo AI? |

Hi Fran. Your mentor was certainly correct that judges are very subjective. I went through PSA judges training and one thing that was emphasis was to leave your personal prejudices aside when you judge. Since impact is an element of judging, it takes some control to not let your own likes and dislikes influence you. Please don't give up as competitions are both fun and educational. |

Outstanding LC. Thank you so much. I will download these and compare the three. BTW, you are correct on my having removed some parts, however, this edition was not the one I used in competition. I had worked and reworked this image trying to see if there was any way to make it better, and your efforts really helped. Thanks again. |

Hi Ginny - If you're not going to use the image in competition, I would recommend following Dan's suggestion plus starting at the left most leaf, remove the limb behind the bird's head. Also there's a spot just to the left of the bird's beak that you could remove. Nice colors! |

Ginny and Dan thanks for your comments. It's very confusing to me why judges in several countries didn't like this image. |
