Stuart, Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. In my photography Cropping is an outcome of a true issue. I believe that a photographer should resolve it in the camera not on the computer. And even in the event Cropping is required then only in the 2/3 ; 3/2 proportions of the frame. |

Barbara, I like the picture and the positioning of the subject tree on the 1/3 left. The contrast of the image is too low / texture is too high creating the looks of the clouds un realistic with the horizon lines of the mountains. |

Larry, while the picture is good I have a few thoughts:
1. my personal taste - too much yellow
2. ND6 during the day is almost but not enough. ND10
3. The rock in the foreground - is bright and is too dominant. To the extension it competes with the lighthouse. |

Thanks. To get the light trails I had to wait for darker sky to allow a longer exposure. That shifted the entire center of attention downwards from the windows and ambient light to a busy street. Minor change big difference. |

I like the transition from bright in the front to dark in the back. No sky - good choice!. Hard to say how far you are or how big the hills are. Good shot |

Thanks Jon,
I did open up a bit the shadows. However I accounted for it in the exposure. the dynamic range of Digital full frames is phenomenal and allows for much flexibility. Thank you Jon |

Hi Margaret yes thats the intention. In portrait photography it is common practice to keep a shallow depth of field. It helps emphasize the subject over the background. In fact there are even specific lenses for that. The Nikkor 135mm f2 DC has TWO aperture rings to control depth of field behind and in front of the focal point SEPARATELY. Thank you |

Lance, I must admit you are a challenge for me. in the most positive way. Seriously. As a photographer I was taught that my language is the picture and not the words around. You have a much more poetic, holistic philosophic approach to the medium that adds an entire layer that is foreign to me yet very compelling.I much appreciate admire and learn.
back to the picture:
1. The lower frame on a vertical crop is outstanding
2. Comparing the Sepia ( yes sepia :) ) to B&W ; the color version below - both are better in my view than the Sepia and convey your story better. |

Lance, Can you share your thought what led you choose Sepia ?
you managed well to hide the third stump behind the second and by doing so, you encapsulated the the sun on the left third to counter balance the while the other two stumps on the right side. Nicely done

The portrait is spot on. As if if you brought this soldier back to life. and the details - so many. Well done !
The " adjustments to reduce the background" - are very well seen around the hat edges especially on the top and on the left. |

It does not get much better than that. Lines, perspective, exposure. I wonder of one thing: This crop is square. In other-words, It is probably cropped. If so, perhaps can you share the full version ? |

Mark, Not only this is a very good picture the dynamic range is spot on. The more I look the more I discover, and the more I discover the more I love it. Whats the shadow on the front left ? |

I like it Jon. Only one minor thought - less sky. The white wall on the background of the white sky is a given but cropping a bit the sky will make the wall bigger in the picture therefore with more presence |
