Diane,
This is a complex and beautiful picture. I'm big fan of little editing, and appreciate very much you fixed only basics. Indeed the the brightness "opened up" the picture and the white balance kept the mysterious atmosphere. |

Michael,
Well done. This is a well composed picture. The combination of the colors and textures draws me into the crater. I wonder how this picture would look like in B&W ?
Are these the original colors of the ground ?
The lighting as well is very even and pleasing. I would love to hear more about the Picture

Barbara,
This is a fantastic picture. I can see it in the middle page of a magazine.
For me 3 things made it:
1. The long exposure
2. The chic of the high dark grass in the foreground - It adds so much texture
2. The gradual transition from dark to light tones as you go up / deep.

Larry,
This is a picture !
the color, lighting, texture. I love it.
I would love to see the original next to it.
Are you photographing large format or the square is a cropped version ?

Hi Bill and nice to meet you,
beautiful colors and interesting composition.
For me, the picture has so much interesting objects colors and contrast in front and at the lower part that i could easy overlook all the effort you put in the sky. The dark red in front of the blue, the white line on the road leading the eye into the picture are a world of its own. |

Arne, nice to meet you
In my view the picture is magical for two reasons:
1. your choice to pose the water in the center of the frame exposed at high key gets immediate attention. The lack of details in the water is then causing the eve you "scroll" in all directions and discover the beauty.
2. The tonal range of the GFX is second to none. The low contrast and soft looks feels like jumping right in.

Jon,
This is a keeper. No doubt about it.
the bars, the skull and the old car are telling the story of the farm life.
perhaps a bit of more farm in the frame Or just a bit of angle to show more perspective of the car would emphasis the depth and the surroundings.
the choice of sepia makes the picture even more compelling.

Nice to meet you Mike,
The composition is beautiful and the choice of low contrast equal density contributes to showing texture and age. I love how the geometry leads the eye towards the center (in red) Well done! While the balustrade contributes to telling story of the era the white clouds being the brightest point in the picture are competing on the attention of the viewer (in yellow). VERY TRICKY. To keep attention on the composition: One solution is photographing the picture at night. Perhaps another way, is a simpler cropped version without the clouds(b). Hard fro me to say both ver are very good. |

Lance,
Your choice was clear - B&W. So I'll take a swing at the bat from the B&W view: Texture, Composition, and Light.
The overall is a pleasing view of a beautiful valley. "It tells the story" and captures the atmosphere. The center of gravity, the interest point, the bright areas, the strongest contrasts, patterns, depth, and shapes are all on the far left 1/3.Which for me, almost makes this picture a composition of 2 separate pictures. Each with a life of its own giving 3 options to choose from: a, b, a+b |

Thank you very much Lance for the review. I love the definition "Compositional Structure" It certainly an accurate definition and food for thought. With your permission I will use your term in the future. While the view is indeed unusual
(intentionally) it is realistic as a fact. Old school guys like my self were taught to solve everything inside the camera rather than dark room / screen, exactly as you mentioned. Just great thank you again !

Margaret,
Nice to meet you! this is my first contact in the group.
Well done picture. From left to right there are 4 different strips of texture: gravel, rail, the trail with the subject, and the building. Each is different and adds to the general interest. The subject is well posed in the power point of the frame and very well articulated. The bright head is against the shadow and the dark body is against the the bright high grass. Perfect timing! The rail emphasizes the depth, creating the composition and creates 4 triangles which adds to the interest and the dynamic feeling of the picture.
