58 Dec 25 Reply thank you Bruce to take the time to look and comment on my image. I think cropping more doesn't work (I tried), but your idea to tone down the apple it is a good suggestion

58 Dec 25 Reply Isaac,

despite the appearance was not too cold.. (16 C). However, I guess that if you seat there all day you can feel cooler, particularly because it was very humid.

Thank you for your kind words

58 Dec 25 Comment Bruce this is a great street humorous image. The expression of the couple contrast with the open smiles of the two performers. More the fact the man is likely to be a pastor makes the contrast even stronger. The image is sharp.

I really love this

58 Dec 25 Comment Maxim, this is a well composed street image. I think the bright part of the image works almost as creating a negative space that isolates the main subject: the woman with the umbrella. Technically the image is sharp and the details of the rain is creating the atmosphere. The umbrella design is almost a note of humor. High heels and the lifted foot provide the sense of "how difficult is to walk in this condition". I am not sure the image convey a feeling of isolation. The fact we can see the car and the city background this is not what it comes to my mind. On the other hand this image makes me smile.

58 Dec 25 Comment Isaac, this is a very nice image capturing two tourists wearing a traditional clothing. I think the people behind them laughing tell the story. The image is sharp and I agree with Maxim is a mix between a travel and a street photography image. I also like the expression of their face that is engaging with your camera.

71 Dec 25 Reply Thank you Dennis. I think those are two different images. The original one I posted is more a "landscape" one with the Dzong being part of the landscape. The cropped one is more an architecture one where the Dzong "is the subject".

71 Dec 25 Comment John this is a very nice fall season image of this location that I guess is a temple in Nanzen Ji, Japan. I find your image sharp and with well balanced color. However, I think the composition doesn't work. This is an unbalanced image with an explosion of colors on the left and a very dull anonymous section on the right. Maybe moving a little to the right or checking for another composition would have created a stronger image.

71 Dec 25 Comment Mike, this is definitely an image that tells a story, and it goes very well with the one you posted last month. I think your composition is spot on. You have a triangular-shaped foreground, with the white sheep set against a darker background. To me, the image feels a little soft, and it could be improved by increasing clarity in some areas. You might also consider selectively darkening the foreground slightly, as it is quite bright.

I also would like to share my thoughts on your statement that the best way to capture an image in this situation is "to shoot and shoot and hope something decent turns out." I confess that up to about ten years ago, I worked the same way. Then I started working with great photographers, some of whom were still using film. They forced me to rethink the idea that, since it doesn't cost much, you should shoot as many images as you can. They taught me that we should click only when we feel it's right, that it's important to previsualize the image in our minds and, anticipate what we want to achieve.
I've been working this way ever since, and I have to say it has helped my photography a lot. I just came back from a two-week trip to Bhutan dedicated solely to photography, and I returned with 1,900 images in total. Ten years ago, I would have come back with 20,000, and most of them would have been useless.

Please note that I'm not saying this is the way to work-I simply wanted to share my experience and stimulate discussion.

71 Dec 25 Comment Spring, I would agree with Tom that the lights coming from the left creates an excellent mood and is not distracting. Saying that I have two issues with this image. First is very soft. You don't provide your exif data but is either out of focus slightly or there is some motion. Second, you have a lot of bright spot in the water. Many years ago I have been thought to use a polarizer filter to take images of fall colors and water with bright light to minimize the strong spot. Since that moment, I always use one and I think in this case it would helped you a lot.

71 Dec 25 Comment Dennis, your adjustment has significantly improved the image. However, I think you can still crop a little more tighter of what you did. The bright green leaves in the foreground are distracting. More you can improve the waterfall and make the major elements more prominent by increasing the brightness in the water and make the green area darker. You have a very bright zone on the right where the branches do not have any leaves that drag my eye. I took the liberty to play with your image a little. I made the waterfall brighter and take down saturation in the water so the "bluish" tonality has gone completely. I have darkened the area around the waterfall and the main tree and cropped the image tighter, so the distracting bright green leaves are almost gone.
Let it me to know what do you think

71 Dec 25 Comment I am going to be the voice of the chorus, but I think this image works the way it is. The red phone cabin and the pub are the elements that tell the story. The empty space is the narrative. As Butch said is a postcard of what it was and now is disappearing. Luigi Ghirri a famous italian photographer proposed this kind of pictures as "a form of urban landscape".

71 Dec 25 Reply Hi Mike,

thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think your idea to darken a little the sky and the mountain was right. I have used a graduate filter to do this and I like the effect (see revised image 1). Regarding the idea to crop more, I am submitting this too but honestly I prefer the original crop much more because it places the Dzong in the context. I am curious to see what the other think
