Thank you John. Appreciated you sharing your thoughts. In this image, my subject was "the bridge" so I want to have all elements highlighting the bridge. Since this is an attempt for an "artistic" image, I think the silky water was good for the context. The dark shadows are made on purpose to avoid distractions.
Have a great day

John, I just echo comments from Tom regarding the cropping. Otherwise I would not change a thing. As a curiosity, why did you choose to shoot an HDR image? From what I see the image shows a normal contrast and with the dynamic range of the Z-7, I am not sure you even need anymore to shoot HDR. Indeed, if you were not telling us this is a HDR image, I would not have guess it was.

Nigel, this is a lovely image with an excellent composition in my opinion. The disposition of the rocks create a triangle and the dramatic sky help the rock to stand out. The only element creating some distraction is the black trail. You may consider to clone that out, but I understand it can not be that easy.

Ryan, I think photographing the woods and the forest is always very challenging. Light, composition, impossibility to control mother nature make this kind of photography something you need to experiment with. Your image is a nice attempt to give a glimpse of the forest and is well exposed.I find the tree in the foreground very distracting and also think it makes the section of the image to the right invisible or not interesting. I believe the tree in the middle ground is "the subject" of the photo. So I took the liberty to take your image and crop out the trunk in the foreground. This in my humble opinion creates two advantages. First, move the subject to the third of the image, second the diagonal branch of the tree lead the eye in the image.
Let me know what do you think

Thank you Tom, this is very kind of you and happy you find the image interesting. About the bridge is interesting to notice this one has been around for more of 500 years while the new one (from where I took the image) has crashed three times in the last 100 year because the water. They will inaugurate the last one next week... Hopefully this one will last longer.

Tom,
if had not been for your description I would have thought this bridge is somewhere in north east Europe. I think your image conveys well an image of this place. The bridge leads the eye in the image. The red roofs make a nice contrast with blu of the sky and the clouds. There is a nice use of shadows and light. All together is a very nice image.

Susan, I think you made the right decision by converting to monochrome. I like your image because the contrast between the person interviewed and the apparently lack of interest around. Only few people and some just ignoring what is going on.

It reminds me an old thing on the web it was called "People from Walmart". I think your image is telling the story and is well composed.

Marianne, this is a great candid photo and it creates emotion. We can not know if this is the first encounter or not, but there is a clear connection between these two people. The shallow depth of field help to isolate them from the background and make this image outstanding.
thank you for sharing

Jeff, this image tells the story. Since the eclipse made people crazy (just thinking all extra flights organized to get this from the skies), I guessed it was taken at that time. Regardless, even if we don't know this was related to the eclipse, the image tells a story. Something in the sky is catching the attention and has to be something important since everybody is looking up.

Lou, this is a very nice image telling the story you describe. The two girls in the foreground are well positioned in the frame and they suggest a different character with the one in the back appearing more shy and avoiding to look at the camera. The leading line of the rail guide the eye to the mosque. Well done.
