An excellent image John with a dramatic light. I personally think that the sky above the clouds creates some distraction. Maybe a composition that emphasize more the structure of the landscape and take away the sky over the clouds could have a stronger impact. Considering the fantastic dynamic range of the Z-7, I rarely do any HDR anymore. I usually expose for the hihgliths since the shadows can be recover up to 5 stops without having a significant noise showing up. Just my two cents thought.

Excellent work Nigel. You were able to isolate the tree and placing it in the location. Since you did a lot of work with the post processing, you can consider to remove the shadow that makes understanding the image has been manipulated.

Mike, your image definitively convey a sense of serenity and calmness. The ewe is showing her willingness to protect her baby. The light afternoon light gives a three-dimensional feeling to the image.

Thank you John, I have the monochrome too and I like it. Saying that the light is so special that I feel in this case the color version is better to me. Just a personal taste.

Theresa this is a very nice image. I agree with others that correcting the vertical perspective has improved it. I was not much bothered by the electric cables. To me they added to the story.
Good work

Hi Tom. I think your last revised image has improved for sure by removing the burnt highlights in the sky. I like the lighthouse far in the background. It contributes to create the story. Excellent work.

Tom, thank you very much for your kind comment. I did not use any sepia, just warmed up a little bit the original image because with a ND they tend to be "bluish". This was very closed to the light of that morning. Is common to get this kind of light there during the winter.

Thank you Chuck, I had one in landscape but not with the expression of these two boys like this. More, in the landscape there would be too many distractions in the background. Thanks

Patti,
this is another image that tell the story. The man and the dog have clearly a connection while the woman looks like an intruder. She may know him looking at her espression and the fact she is dropping a bag next to him, but if this is the case she is not very happy. To me the image is lacking sharpness, but this can be to the cropping (although your Leica 47MP sensor should not have any problem to extreme cropping or to the low resolution for the upgrading. I also would consider to tone down the truck in the background. Is a very bright object in the image and the eye is going there because is brightness.

Marianne, really like this photo that I agree with comments from others reminds something from the past. The line of the building, interrupted by the palm tree locate the scene somewhere at the tropics. I believe the people add something to the story, the one wrapped in a beach towel tells us there is a beach likely very close. There is a full scale of grays. What camera have you used? You said this is a raw file, so is this a monochrome camera? Most of the DSLR when you apply a monochrome preset save just a JPEG file becasue the sensor is for color and not for black and white.

Lou, to me street photography should tell a story and I think this photo definitively fulfill the criteria. The expression of the two girls is just making us to smile and image they are having a sort of fun conversation. I usually try to avoid distracting elements such a signs in this kind of images, but I think in this particular case it add to the story because we know now they are sitting in a fast food restaurant.
I am amazed how good has become Topaz for sharpening the image. Looking at your original, I think it looks like a motion issue you have used a long zoom and a relatively low shutter speed for this kind of lens. So this could be the reason. |

A very nice environmental portrait Chuck. There is a good eye contact. In the monochrome image is hard to understand what is has in his hands, in other words without your explanation I would have trouble to understand what he is showing.
