Hi John,
thank you for looking at my photo and sharing your thoughts. I can see advantages for both your suggested crops. They are different images and they both have things I like. I actually have an image with your second crop but I preferred to post the one you have seen because in my opinion shows the scenery. Regardless I see some advantages in your proposed revision of this image.
Best wishes

Thank you Mike for sharing your thoughts. I was seeking to create some moody dark effect on that image and I can see this might have been go too far. Sometimes I like trying something new.

Thank you Theresa for taking the time and commenting on my image. I am not sure what spots are you seeing. I can see one at the bottom of the waterfall (that one is a rock) but can't see the other.

Thank you Nigel, I agree "silky" or "not silky" water is a question of taste. I don't have a strong opinion on this. In some images I think it works, in other is probably overdue. When I take photo of waterfalls or streams I experiment different exposure time. In this particular photo I thought the silky water helps to recognize the water slowing down in the bottom part. But I can see this may be interpreted differently by others.

Tom this appears to be a very interesting place with full of photographic opportunity. I like the image but I have the feelings there are two images in this photo. One is the building and the other is represented by the waterfall. Indeed your frame is split 50/50. Since there is not much in the foreground water I am wondering if you have another photo with less water, so that the building and the waterfall become more connected. The image of the statues really give a sense of proportions.

Nigel, this is a very nice scenery and is well exposed and I would consider it a "documentary" image. I like the sky. My concern is that the image is split 50/50 between the landscape and the sky and this create some uncertainty in the observer of what is the real subject: is this the sky or the landscape? Maybe a 16:9 crop cutting a little the sky would make the image stronger.

Mike, I really like your photo and the way you post process it. I would like to see the original image but it looks like these were difficult conditions and the photo has definitively a strong impact.

Ted I can just echo what Theresa and Tom has said. This is a wonderful scenery and your photo convey a feeling of serenity and calmness. Like the reflections and the diagonal line of the foreground leading the eye into the frame.
I agree the white object (I think is a rock) can be clone out or simply toned down a little.
I will go there next April. Hope will be able to capture some great scenery as this photo.

Theresa,
I think this is an interesting idea and an image the convey the feeling of the fall season. For my personal taste the red color of the tree in the upper part of the photo is a little bit too saturated. More the reflections in the water are brighter of the real tree that is dark in the image. I would consider to tone down a little the red and make reflections a little less bright.
Like very much your composition

Tom,
thank you for looking and providing your honest comment to my image. I think the purpose of this group is indeed discussion about photos more of just saying "this is a great image".... I see your point and indeed I think your suggestion improved the photo. I have created a layer for the waterfall and cool down and de saturated it a little.
Let me know your thoughts.
