Thank you for the clarification, and I think the reason for my distaste of the photo is due to my hard headed unwillingness to get out of the box; not usual for me, but certainly the problem on this occasion.
BTW, happy Hanukkah. |

Lance, I don't know what size you are planning for the print, but I would hope it is very large, this tree deserves it. When I see this photo on my IPad, I'm not impressed. When I download it, I got what Margaret was saying. The tree is huge, and magnificent and the light coming through the branches makes it seem almost heavenly since the luminosity must come from the angels. I would almost take up a whole wall to give this picture the space it needs and deserves.
Nice does not say enough. Super! |

Jon, loved the photo. The patterns, the lighting that creates the contracts is terrific. So much simplicity and yet so much to look at. |

I don't think I can. Perhaps it is because the focus was on the closer plane than the one occupied by the man. The background image, or what seems to me to be the background image, is clearly in focus, while the image with the older man in it seems blurred creating an overall image that seems chaotic and to confusing to ponder.
Please tell me more about why you chose this technique, you've now made me more curious. |

Margaret, loved the photo. I agree with the comment suggesting that the clouds have just a bit more definition. The right sine fo the fence doesn't bother me that much, but I have to agree that I liked Mike's removal.
Haven't been to this part of the country since stationed at Fort Dix in the 70's. Guess I'll have to get back there. Overall, nice composition. |

Adi, I have read your Bio, and believe me when I say I have a tremendous respect for your education and experience in photograph, but the photo just does not work for me. I say that in total recognition that that is my problem not yours. I have a tendency to try to appreciate artistic approaches to all art forms, unfortunately for me that means that there are some I love and some, I have to stretch to enjoy. The first thing that struck me was the image of the man in the middle. My eye spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong with the image instead of appreciating the other aspects of the photo. If it had been a more clear head shot, I 'm sure I would have like the photo more. Again, more my problem that yours. |

Mike, brave attempt to try a new (for you) technique to achieve a more artistic product. I have a tendency to agree with previous comments that it may have been a bit too much, but….. Aside from that, I guess my only comment would have been that if you are attempting to create a seemingly dated photo I would have decreased the sharpness just a very little, and that is only based on my belief that today's cameras and lenses are a bit sharper that yesterdays.
Nice work. |

Debasing, nice photo! I've travelled and hike this country many, many times over the years, and unless you take a picture of a massive rock wall I'm not sure how you get a less "busy" photo. I fond myself wondering if you attempted to sharpen the image, and the reason for my inquiry is the white line that seems to follow the ridge, especially right of center.
I might have cropped it a little differently, but that is very much in the eye of the photo artist. I also felt that I might have tried a different f-stop to see if one would do a better job of highlighting the depth between the ridge and the foreground on the right of the photo, but you may have already tried this.
All in all, I think it is a very nice representation of the terrain and makes me want to drive down that road sometime in the near future. |

Thanks all for the encouraging comment although I will say that luck had more to do with this photo than anything else. Today I am in Basel, Switzerland and just came out of Natural History Museum with showing of this year photographs of the year. These were photos from children as you as ten to professionals in wildlife photography, photo-journalism, photo-tourism. Wonderful showcase! |
