Israel,
You've done a marvelous job, again, of directing me to look directly at your subjects face and toning down the surroundings so they aren't distracting but still add great context to the image.

Adrian,
I do like the seagull but agree that it distracts the viewer from the silhouetted people. My mantra is that we have to use all tools available to direct the viewer to the subject and hold them there, so removing the seagull enhances that goal. But I love the scene and drama captured in the image. |

Emil,
Loved Jack and really miss him. He really got me into monochrome after many years ignoring it. I told him that to me he was Adams on steroids..
Re your image, i love the composition but find the bright leaf in the top left a bit distracting. So I too played with it a bit. Use two radial masks in lightroom to darken and reduce the highlights of the offending leaf and brighten up the primary subject a bit.
Your thoughts? |

Mandy,
I think all three of the versions yours, Pete's and Emil's do a good job of isolating the mother and colt (not sure if Zebra's have colts) which is what makes this great. Your use of depth of field isolated the pair and added depth that gives the viewer a sense of being there. Both Pete's and Emil's versions add to it but are a bit dark for my preference. The only nit, i have is the mothers snout looses detail and clear definition. But that's a small item, and overall its a great image.

Pete, I love it. You definitely got the depth right. As a result you portray the building with the dignity it deserves. |
