Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
67 Nov 25 Comment Hi Larry,
What a wonderful behavior capture. It's so much more interesting than if it was just sitting there with the fish. The bright blue sky sets it off well.
I'm going to take a contrary position on the "extra" branch. I find that it adds to the composition in that it is another repeating diagonal element in the frame. Not only are the 2 branches on the same diagonal, they mimic the diagonal created by the outstretched left wing and the shadow across the body. Now if that branch were at a different angle I might tend to agree more about removing it.

67 Nov 25 Comment Hi Jenny,
Welcome to the group. Absolutely lovely image for your introduction!
Your composition is excellent. The rocks make a good foreground and as Dave noted that separation of the island is critical. Experimenting with different shutter speeds paid off here- something I tend to forget to do, or else don't go far enough in the different times to get different effects. This 1 sec exposure gives an ethereal feel to the water yet leaves enough detail that there's some texture to it.
I also find the rocks to be a bit too dark. But I wouldn't go as bright as Butch's suggestion for the same reason you mentioned.
Anyway- this is gorgeous. Welcome again.

67 Nov 25 Comment Butch this is beautiful with the rimlight and the sun rays coming in from the top. I love the overall golden glow. You found a good subject for this, with a bit of a lean and all those arms coming out. And all alone without others in the background. You've given me some inspiration with this.

67 Nov 25 Comment Definitely a regal portrait of this fellow, the light angle couldn't be better to set that mood. You did a nice job of accentuating this in your processing. His distant gaze speaks of surveying his realm, to me.
Personally I wouldn't have bothered to clone out all the flies. Yes it does make a cleaner portrait, but flies are part of wild lions. Now this could be a portrait taken in a zoo where there aren't as many flies around. I would at least have left some. But that's my taste...
I'd also crop about half of the blank space on the left. Since the image is a tight portrait, having that extra space just doesn't feel balanced with the tightness at the top. Again, a matter of taste.
All that said, I really like this image, fine job with it!
Africa is such a great place, looking forward to seeing more of your images from the trip!

67 Nov 25 Comment Hi Bud,
Well I guess I've photographed enough scavenging birds that part doesn't bother me :) This is a really nice behavior shot showing the way the bird is "mantling" to protect its meal. Your low perspective is perfect for this scene.
I was going to suggest the same crop that Butch made of the top. Personally I'm ok with the brighter foam, having it darkend down seems unrealistic to me.
Terrific shot and really nice work on it in post.

67 Nov 25 Comment It seems that the ele's are too far apart in this image for the chase story to be clear. I picked it out of the sequence because I liked the dust coming off of their backs. Here's another shot from a second earlier in the chase. Does this tell that story better? Nov 12th
67 Nov 25 Reply Thanks Larry, I agree about the flipping on this one. Nov 12th
67 Nov 25 Reply Thanks David, I'm kinda partial to the left one as well. Nov 12th
67 Nov 25 Reply Hi Jenny, thanks for your feedback. I hadn't noticed the insect, and have now taken care of it. Nov 12th
67 Nov 25 Reply Hi Butch,
Thanks for the feedback. I do agree that there's alternatives with just one of the ele's- actually I think either one could work. I do a lot of flipping for the reason you mentioned but I think Larry's point about the power of the original orientation is a good one.
I'm putting another image from the sequence in another reply.

91 Nov 25 Comment That bird has quite the stride! That wide stride combined with the lowered neck show focus and intent, a nice story. The colors are pretty, that aqua water sets off the yellow legs well. I like your crop- enough space for the bird to move in, but not too much.
I wonder if the clutter in the background is debris in the water itself, a condition I see here a lot. A shallower f/stop, or a lower shooting angle (as in really low) can help to make those disappear. Of course a lower angle makes the reflection different so that might not have been an option.
I like this a lot, a very attractive image.

91 Nov 25 Comment The first thing I notice here is those eyes, so bright and intensely gazing off to the side. Beautiful wing position and a lovely setting. Glad you got the shot while it was possible. Nov 21st
91 Nov 25 Comment This is so pretty, such a classic winter scene. I like the bright snowy background, and the 2 vertical stems to anchor the image. I also like that the twig the jay is perched on is still snow-covered, they haven't knocked it all off yet! Good pose of the jay and beautiful color.
Selecting the bird and brightening it up a little bit does help, it works a little better against the snowy scene.
A Christmas card shot for sure!

91 Nov 25 Comment Hi Adrian, this is so cute with the parent and tiny chick. Yes it's great that you caught the parent calling, it does add another level of interest to the shot. I like that you got down low, both from giving the eye-level connection with the bird and the softness of the background.
The exposure on the bird looks much more natural in the original image. In addition to the hot area on the chest, the head should be black like the original- there's plenty of definition as is.
Super cute shot!

91 Nov 25 Reply Hi Bruce, I debated whether to leave any of the shoreline, and how much to leave. Thanks for giving the alternate view. I'm still on the fence about it! :) Nov 8th
