Now that's my kind of storm chasing..!
Getting the storm right at sunset with the beautiful color really makes this special. I like the composition with the opposing diagonals of the ridgeline and the clouds coming down to meet it. The lightening strike happened in a perfect spot to complete a triangle for you.
My only nit with this lovely image is the halo above the ridgeline. I'm not sure which processing step introduced it, or if it was in the original, but if you can work to eliminate that it will put the finishing touch on the image. |

Sounds like a wonderful way to practice your Birds in Flight- what a subject to have that much choice with!
I like the wing position and the fact that you have that white tail fully spread. Good sharpness from wingtip to wingtip. I also like the relatively plain background.
I do like Butch's alternate crop with more space in front of the bird- someplace for it to fly in to. |

Larry, I think this does tell a story- one that you have to think about for a minute to understand, which appeals to me.
I like Scott's input about making this brighter. That introduces more contrast between the light sand and darker rocks, which helps emphasize those textures and shapes.
I really love your second image- the colors and the shapes are incredible. |

I really like this from the standpoint of telling a story, and the wonderful patterns that we get with their stripes. There's a nice repetition with the 2 looking at us in between the 2 looking to the left. I think you can make this pattern stronger by cropping more closely, eliminating everything under the bellies. I'd also like to see this much brighter, black-and-white rather than shades of gray.
For me this is more about artistry than impact / competition. I'd consider printing this. I like it a lot. |

I guess we've sort of been trained that things take on a blue cast in the shade in photos, even though we don't see like that. I think your second revision looks pretty good, color-wise- more like what we would see.
I also like the light, and the fact that the face of the second bird is lit but not the whole body. That helps to keep it as a secondary player in the image. To me there's enough of a diagonal between them that the placement works.
Yes the bright reeds are distracting, but I do like the habitat as part of the story. I tried a different crop removing some of the brightest, but including more of what's in the background. Having that take up more space makes it more part of the story- almost a 3rd element in addition to the 2 birds. The other thing I did was straighten the image- the reflections didn't line up with the birds. |

Hi Adrian, Persistence paid off getting a reasonably clear shot of this interaction. The crop is effective. Nice job recovering the detail in the shadows.
I had the good luck to also see young chicks there several years ago- I think the colony may have been smaller then. There was one very newly hatched chick (the eggshell was near) and it wasn't much smaller than the one here. So I'd guess this one is days or at most a couple of weeks old. Very special encounter, well captured. |

I like the pose of the bird, it has a lot of personality sitting up so tall and proud. Your processing has brought out beautiful color and detail, very nice.
I'd also suggest a bit of a crop off the left, but also would leave a small amount more space at the bottom. It would be a more attractive place in the frame. |

Spoonbills are such great subjects with that bright pink color. Nice feeding pose captured. I might try another crop that includes all of the reflection. But then, leaving it partial makes it a bit more abstract.
Nice job with the processing and bringing out the color and detail. |

Maria, I have done a number of pelagic trips and indeed it is a very difficult platform to shoot from!
I like the pose of the bird with the tail spread and the feet so clearly visible, and pink- just the little hint of color makes them stand out. Capturing it against the wave adds some interest to the background. You got great detail in the bird- that fast shutter helps, but I'm most impressed that it's that good with such a high ISO.
For me there's a little too much space at the top, I'd crop down just a bit. But that's a matter of taste.
Very nice shot.

Adrian, nicely captured, I like the pose/ wing position in the shot. Having the branch in the beak is a plus, as are the clouds in the sky behind. Nice job with the processing. |

I like the relative poses of the 2 birds, as they are interacting with each other. It would be nice if they were a bit closer together, if that opportunity happened.
I also agree with the slight crop from the top and a bit more saturation reduction. Changing the white balance by increasing the color temperature (like a cloudy or shade setting) makes the swans white- and I think makes the reed color look better too. |

Nice pose of the bird, I like the sideways glance as it makes a nice curved shape and accentuates the crest. The weathered stump is an attractive perch.
I like that you captured the fall color behind it, giving it a bit more of a story than just "bird on a stick". I find the whole image to be a bit on the dark side and might try simply increasing the exposure some. That will make the background colors even brighter, but in my book that is a plus. |
