Hi Scott, thanks for the suggestions. Yes that brighter area is the reason I cropped where I did, but you're right that the space feels better with more at the top. So I made a new version with your suggestions. |

Hi Scott, welcome to the group.
I like your nice low perspective on this. It gives you a good look at the face, which has good detail. It also gave you really nice triangle shapes- the triangle of the shell, and one formed by the legs, head and frame edge. Having only the head sharp brings your eye right back to that face, after exploring the rest of the image.
Very nice image. |

This is a lovely scene, I like how the cacti frame the core of the milky way. I do like the crop, but the original also works for me. The color in the clouds adds another layer of interest. You're lucky that you didn't have satellites or airplanes going across the sky at that hour!
For my taste, the color is a bit too vibrant for a night time scene. I desaturated it a little- about 20 points- to get what felt more natural to me.
From what I've read, it's the pixel density in the higher mp cameras that cause the old 400/500 rule to be less applicable- the star goes across more # of pixels when they're denser, causing a streak more easily. I did some shots last month and it did seem that the time needed to be much shorter to not have streaks.

That nest must be pretty low to be able to shoot it from a kayak!
For me, the white chicks stand out nicely against the darker background and keep my attention. It also helps that the background tonality is relatively even, no bright spots. The pose is so cute and does tell the domination story.
With those huge beaks though I'd think twice about the scratch under the chin. Just sayin'. |

Hi Larry,
We missed the giraffe this time :) Our guide was an incredible tracker and was always watching for fresh prints to be aware of what animal was around.

Thanks Bud! Yes they are much better looking than the adults we saw. |

Thanks Butch. I tried opening the shadows a bit, but don't want to go too far and lose the contrast.
Yes a lower perspective would be nice but impossible- if we'd been out of the vehicle they wouldn't have been close. |

Hi David,
Well since I've photographed grizzlies with a similar head-shake I recognized it wasn't bigfoot pretty quickly :) But I've never seen that behavior with a fish- very cool and unique capture. The shutter speed and DoF seem to be perfect for this action, with good detail in the fish and that lovely swirl of water drops.
For me the processed version is a bit dark which made the bear blend in to the background vegetation even more. So I tried an alternate keeping more of the original brightness. I selectively increased the contrast on the bear (black point, clarity) and decreased the highlights of the background a bit.
A great story here and I'm sure an exhilarating experience!

Bud, this is a really nice portrait of this fellow. Good choice given the situation, for sure. I like the head angle where you see the one complete horn and the start of the other. It helps give some dimension to the animal in this nice soft light.
Your processing work eliminating the rock was well done.
I do like the square, tight crop- my one suggestion would be to leave a little more room on the right. About double the space that's there now between the edge of the horn and the frame. But then my taste runs to a bit looser compositions.
All in all this is a very nice portrait and a good addition to a portfolio.

As an abstract type shot, I like this. The shapes, patterns and lines of the fence are cool, and you put the birds in good spots. I would take this a step further and bring the white slider in to make that background pure bright white. |

Raptor shows like that can be a great opportunity to get flight shots that would otherwise be hard to do. I like the spread-out wings and the owl coming (seemingly) right at you. It shows off that facial disk so well.
I do like the story told with the trees in the image. It gives some context. Bruce's crop works well - having the tree as a frame edge instead of a distinct object to compete with the owl. |

Very nice capture, having that little bit of movement in the wing tips adds nicely. I also like just the hint of sun on her breast without it being overly bright. A delightful morning- now I want a donut! |

You captured a lovely landing pose here, wings up and the body and head visible. What really makes this though is the beautiful fall color in the background, and how nice and smooth it is.
Bosque is a great place for birds, but last year Bernardo was better for photography because there were cornfields where there were none at Bosque. |

Maria,
This is a great flight shot - I love the wing position you captured, and it's so nice and sharp. Good choice to flip the direction. It surprises me sometimes how much more impact an image can have with that simple change. But the "icing on the cake" is that fish, especially since you see the eye. Really nice shot. |

Hi Jerry, thanks for the nice comments. I'm back now. My friend and I spent 4 days each at 2 different camps in private reserves that border Kruger and loved both places. We had excellent driver/guides- it worked out very well for us to not have to try to find our way around the confusing terrain. A bonus of the private reserves is we could be out after dark, so we did some night-spotting before dinner given the 5:45 sunset! Magical place and it makes me want to explore there more. |
