That is a very interesting phenomenon, not something I've ever seen before. It was worth the scramble to find a good foreground to enhance it. I find the composition interesting and well balanced. The square-ish crop is a part of that feeling of balance.
While the brightness of the cactus does make it stand out, to me it just slightly too bright, to where it competes too much with the rainbow for my attention. I would try selectively reducing the highlights on the cactus. Not a big adjustment, just a little tweak to it.

I'm impressed that you were able to pan and keep up with this fellow from a prone position! I like the low perspective and the separation from the meadow that it gave you.
The soft light is so helpful here, no bright spots or hard shadows to cause distractions.
The pose captured is indeed humorous! I like your choice- I'm sure you had other good frames to pick from as well. |

I'll play with raising the shadows, but don't want to lose the richness of the blacks in doing so. A careful balance. |

Hi Larry, yes I couldn't believe the good luck with this pair. Definitely a highlight memory for the trip. This was indeed handheld from an open vehicle, but our guide was good about shutting off the motor when we stopped. We stayed with them for 10 minutes! |

Yes Etosha was wonderful- lots of the 4 legged wildlife, some even fairly cooperative! I'll be putting some in group 67 in the coming months. |

A very pretty bird in an attractive setting. Your processing has brought out the wonderful colors of this bird very well. |

Jerry, This bird sure posed nicely for you. Backside views aren't always that interesting but in this case, the red feathers down the back make it quite appealing.
I like that the light is overall soft, there are no bright spots or shadows which can be a challenge with forest birds like this. The blurred background is pleasing.
I like what Bruce did with the contrast in the bird. Those black feathers have a more rich appearance, yet still have plenty of detail. You could apply that contrast selectively to the bird to keep the original brighter background. |

I can see why this is a favorite, there's much to like about this little "Angry Bird". The colors are beautiful, the blue really pops against the background. The bird's pose and attitude make it more interesting than a more sedate pose would be. Great image. |

Such a sweet family capture. Having the goslings sandwiched between the parents tells me a nice story about protection and caring for the young. I like that all 4 heads are clearly visible with no overlaps, which for me adds to the story. The golden, rippled water makes a pretty setting.
Technically, it looks to me like the right-hand adult isn't as sharp as the other birds- which is likely due to the relatively shallow DoF at f/7.1. I'd have opted for at least f/11 for this kind of grouping to try to get them all sharp. At this image size it isn't really an issue but it might be more noticeable in a bigger size.
Such a sweet shot, thanks for sharing it! |

Adrian,
First, I agree with your ID of the species.
Such nice sharp detail in those tiny feathers, amazing what we can do at such high ISOs these days. The tongue sticking out makes this frame special for sure.
My preference tends to looser crops (as I'm sure you've noticed!) so I like your original. I also feel it gives more context and more of a story to include the vertical stalk.
Either way, it's a lovely image! |

Maria, what a lovely image of a cute little bird. The uniformly soft background and little bit of purple color in the flowers are such a nice touch.
I like the story / feeling told by your presentation- very quiet and soft and pretty. The gentle flow of the foreground vegetation adds interest and fills the space, but without detracting my attention from the bird.
I also like the more contrasty, cropped versions- but to me it's a different story/ feeling (if only slightly..) So this is a good example of letting your intentions for the image decide which option to choose! |

Hi Steve, glad to be an inspiration :) When you do a photo safari, you are with like-minded people who all want to spend time with willing subjects. We stayed with this Roller, following it to a few different perches as it hunted, and only left when it did. |
