Oooh I like this image even more with the action- you can even see the bug on the leaf that he's reaching for. And I really like the crop with the inclusion of the cluster of leaves and buds in this one. Wonderful!! |

OK here's the crop and I agree it's a big improvement. I'll also play with adjusting the darkness of it, but actually I like the composition better with the end of the line of penguins at the edge of the frame, too. Thanks for the suggestions! |

I really like the dark image with the vibrant fern- it's quite dramatic and eye-catching. The original though tells more of the story of the lava because it's more apparent what it is. I like the original framing as well, but it does need to be darker. So it all depends on your intent for the image!

That must've been quite the opportunity with lots of photographers- I've seen a few images from it posted elsewhere. Glad for you to have been there for it!
I really like your focus on this darker wolf, it does stand out so well against the snowy landscape. You've brought out nice detail in its coat.
I like your crop, I like Michael's looser crop, and actually I really like the original frame with the wolf smaller in the environment. Lots of good choices with this one depending on the story you want to tell.
Congrats on a fine image. |

I like ducks and getting a photo of a couple like this is challenging. It's hard to get both sharp unless they're in exactly the same plane of focus. Maybe a little more DoF would've helped.
My nit is that this isn't level- the reflections should line up with the actual birds. I straightened it and centered the ducks a bit more. I know the opposite of what you "should" do- but I think this is a story of serenity and calm, so centering fits that. |

It's all about the light, isn't it. The dark background with the warm sidelight on the subject makes such a dramatic image.
I would argue that this does tell a nature story since they are sitting in the nest. The similar poses and flared feathers to me say courtship and we know what's coming soon.
Beautifully executed image. |

Very nice! Good exposure, nice pose, attractive perch that doesn't hide the bird or cast shadows on it.
Your crop works fine for a close crop. I also like Michael's looser crop, giving the bird a bit more breathing room.
I'm seeing what looks like some dark halos around the bird and leaves. I wonder if the denoise did that? I don't see any of it in the original.
Pretty bird and a pretty image! Nice work on this one. |

Nothing wrong with photographing from the lodge deck - they can be terrific photo blinds, especially if they've got a bit of height!
Cool to capture it with the moth, that always adds interest. I like how the bird is tucked in to the curve of the branch, and your square crop works for me. Have you tried a horizontal flip of the image?
Good detail considering the dark conditions- these guys always seem to be in shade. I might warm up the color balance a little bit, but that's more a matter of taste than anything.

I like what you've done- and I agree I hadn't thought of it as distracting before Bud mentioned it! I will try this and cropping as well. Thank you for the idea. |

What a tremendous action capture. The bared teeth add to the drama. The flying dust also adds to the action. Well deserving of the honors.
I have to wonder though why you didn't straighten it out before cropping? I tried it, and think the extra lean to the animals gives even more edginess to the action. (from the original, I didn't try to do any other changes)

The shaft of light illuminating the owl in the otherwise dark setting is just fantastic. Really creates an eye-catching image. I love the way the face is upturned and the eyes closed, as if basking in those last rays.
Although the trunk on the right gives some context, I agree that cropping it out strengthens the image. The fact that light is hitting it too, makes your eye go there, away from the owl. A square-ish crop would be nice, as would a vertical of just the owl. |

Lovely image. The bird is sharp where it matters and the pose is quite nice. I know what you mean about that next frame, even at such a high frame rate it's amazing how much those wings move.
The soft background is lovely with just hints of more purple flowers.
Your choice of crop works for me.

He sure popped out and gave you a nice view. I also like leaving the leaves sharp, they do add to the image. And they're so close to the bird, I think it would look a bit weird if they were too blurred.
The dappled light adds some interest and how fortunate that it hit his face, giving you some definition in the black feathers.
I like your crop in general, however I think it's a bit too close on the bottom and right. The "virtual tail" is cut off or close to it. I would try shifting the frame just a bit to the right and down- cutting some off the left as Jerry suggested and leaving a bit more on the right. |

Lots to like on this one. The wing position is good, and I like that we can see a bit of the tail. The yellow eye really stands out. It might be nice to see the full face, but I think this tells the hunting story as it scans the field.
The background is nice and soft but there's enough detail that you can tell it's flying low over a field, adding to the story. |

Snowy Egrets give some of the best poses with the way they raise their crests and display at each other like this. Looks like it was a bit windy as well. (Great Egrets have yellow bills)
Lovely colors and light in this, nice detail. I also like the square-ish crop that just fits the subjects, while giving a pleasing sense of space around them. Well done.
