67 Mar 23 Reply Should we make it a theme for the month? :) Mar 15th
67 Mar 23 Comment Well I'm going to be very slightly contrary here. While I really like the contorted pose of "original 2", I think the story in the main image is also quite strong. It shows the feet pattering/ running, and the wake from the beak shows the strike action. Pictorially the stretched wings fill the frame better too. They're both strong, story-telling images, to be sure.
It's interesting how similar this is to one of Snowy Egret's fishing techniques. I've spent many sessions trying to capture it, it is challenging for sure.

67 Mar 23 Comment A lovely composition and there is a nice silkiness to the water, so your exposure time worked well for the water. At this resolution I didn't notice the leaves!
I find that I'm more drawn to the original image in that I like the brighter green of the foliage and overall appearance. Perhaps something "in between" the 2 images in terms of darkening features. Of course that's a matter of taste and preference though.
Overall a very peaceful, pretty image.

67 Mar 23 Comment What a nice capture of these 2 youngsters. The story I got was one of submission by the bowing bird, trying to avoid an altercation.
I too like the vibrant green background to set them off, it is a pleasing setting for them. I understand why you cropped the bottom; I'd try another crop leaving more of the bottom blurred part just to see if that would work ok.
I have a lot of opportunities on big white birds in bright sun here in AZ- waiting for overcast would be fruitless here :) So my process is pretty similar to what Larry described- full manual, and use test shots with feedback from the histogram and blinkies to dial in to preserve the whites. The meter is nearly useless in this situation. Even with proper exposure though, the detail in the whites can be hard to extract. The Structure tool sometimes is helpful.
Very nice image.

67 Mar 23 Comment This is a lovely image. The gray background, rain streaks and ice on the stems combine to tell a story. You've got a nice arrangement of the 3 birds and a bit of action with the wing out and tail fanned. The little bit of extra sharpening makes it even better. Nice work.

67 Mar 23 Reply Much better! I do think the white balance change I made impacted the color of the bird too much and that is what made it appear lighter. One remaining thing to work on in your revision is the base of the lower bill which now is too bright and has lost all detail. Maybe back off a little on the "white" end of the levels adjustment? 67 Mar 23 Reply Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep playing with it. Mar 12th
67 Mar 23 Comment A fun and colorful shot of a pretty bird! You caught a nice moment of action and stopped it well. Speaking from experience in those conditions, keeping the shutter speed high and sacrificing the ISO is better than having motion blur. Flash can help- but if it is actively raining and/or things are wet, you can get highlights in the water drops which can also be problematic.
I think the original looks better than the processed image, in that it isn't so flat. I took a stab at processing it. Mainly I used the Levels tool and brought in both the black and white points to give it more contrast, and then warmed up the White Balance because I thought it felt "cold and steely", but I may have gone a bit too far with that. I also brought down highlights a bit overall, and then used a local brush tool to further reduce them in some of the background. Then I applied Topaz Denoise with a very reduced amount of sharpening.

67 Mar 23 Comment Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've made some adjustments to tone down the flower and bring up the brightness on the hummer. I may need to go even a bit further with it than this. Mar 10th
