Welcome to the group Susan!
This is a really nice pose with the outstretched wings and a good head position- you can see the concentration on the target. Your choice of crop from the original frame is well done, leaving enough space in the right places for it to not feel cramped or "lost".
White feathers in bright sunlight are a real challenge. My choice in these situations is to go with manual exposure since the light isn't changing, and dial in the exposure so that the whites don't clip using the histogram and "blinkies" for feedback. Just as another option. |

I have to wonder if maybe he was using you as a bit of a buffer to help conceal himself?
I can't add to the list of strengths that you've already mentioned- all of those items are important here. The one thing I would probably do differently would be to put the coyote's head more off-center by cropping some from the left. I don't feel the space is beneficial since his gaze is right-ward.
Cool experience and good that you were able to react and capture the moment. |

I like your choice of crop from the original capture. There's a nice sense of movement and flow with the way the water runs down the dark rocks. That rainbow is quite a jewel.
Did you try creating a second image with the right side, featuring the bright tree and line to the rock face? I think that has some potential as well!
I'm curious if you tried doing this with a slower shutter speed, like 1/2 second? It would've made the water more silky, but might have made the mist a blur instead of the distinct wafts of it that contribute to this image. |

Oh this must have been soooo much fun to watch! Those yellow eyes really do capture your attention. I like the crop- when the subject is looking directly at you, I think centered works well.
I'm not sure that darkening the background that much is really needed here to make the subject stand out. Toning down the highlights might be all it really needs.
You must've taken a lot of frames of this family. If you did capture one where there's more interaction between the trio, it would be even better. |

That pink tongue grabs and holds your attention- capturing that moment, as opposed to a simple portrait, really makes this image. I like that the face is the only thing sharp in this otherwise busy scene. Warming it up works for me.
The only suggestion I have is that the vegetation is on the light side- in the selection you made for noise and sharpness, I'd also try bringing down the brightness very slightly.
Very nice image! |

What a wonderful opportunity you had with so many brightly colored beaks all begging in unison! The moment you captured, with the adult's wings extended upward and all the heads plainly visible, is terrific.
I don't really see a sharpness issue unless you're referring to the dune on the right, the birds all seem quite sharp. I'm in agreement about leaving more space on the bottom, it just feels like there isn't enough of a base to support the birds, especially the one on the left as Larry mentioned.
I was attracted to the brighter blue sky of your post, but realized that the beaks stand out a bit better with the duller sky. They're now clearly the brightest and most colorful part of the scene.
Well done on capturing this, just love the story and the image.

Thanks Richard, I like your crop. I also think the left bird is part of the overall story and I like it. I see your point about the 3rd out of focus bird. I'd rather it weren't there at all, as a first choice. But I think there's a benefit to it being out of focus in that if it were sharp, it would be even more of a distraction as it competes with the bird in front of it. With it soft, it demands a bit less attention. Either way I think just its presence would cause a lower score in competition. |

I did a slightly different crop and then cloned to eliminate the dark bar while still leaving some space at the top. Thanks for the inputs. |
