The image tells a story and obviously you had to crop out the heads in the bottom right. The bright colours in your final version gives it great impact. I am a bit surprised the original was so dark though - even the sky behind the plane looks a bit under-exposed, so I am wondering where the camera was reading its exposure from? |

I Like that the building is correctly exposed and we also get to see the stars above as well. However from a technical point, I can see noise banding in the image - across the dark sky for example. As the original is very dark, you have had to push the shadows a lot, which shows up the noise. Did you consider an HDR approach - several images at different exposures, blended automatically in Lightroom. This type of image would really benefit from that approach. Good attempt from a single image though. |

Inverting the image is a neat trick for your reflection competition. It means there is something 'not quite right' but it takes a moment to work out why. I don't have a problem with the reflected plates because it gives a clue to what is going on. I also like the inclusion of the fish mural which creates the question - is it above the water or below? Nice work.
(PS - I would have thought Ian was used to looking at images upside down, being from Australia - ho ho ho!). |

Ian, I made a mistake this month by not checking your e-mail properly, so I thought we were having December off. Ooops!
Anyway, I think this boat and the mangrove trees is a fascinating subject - a bit like Noah's Ark gone wild. You have some nice light on the buildings in the back ground, but a bit less so on the boat which is rather dark. You could try brightening a bit more in Photoshop or Lightroom, but I think I would have tried a wider angle focal length to 'push' the boat a bit further back in the image and show some more of the skyline. Definitely a location worth re-visiting to get an image that does make your cut. |
