Thanks Henriette. An extra tip is a free program called Stellarium - works on PC, Mac or mobile. It shows the night sky anywhere in the world at any time, so is a great planning tool. |

Thanks Trey. If you go out at night to shoot the Milky Way, you really do need a plan on where to go. |

Thanks for your comments Trey. The camera was placed in about the only position possible, where there were steps down onto the pier below. I couldn't go down onto the pier as the waves occasionally wash over the top, and it was all a bit unnerving, listening to the waves crashing about in the dark! I take your point about the crop, and I will have a look. |

I think you have handled the lighting very well - no blown highlights which would be very easy with the stage lighting and white costumes. Also the 'moment' between the couple is very good. I can't believe he is holding her up with just one arm, but maybe he really is that strong! I have to say I prefer the version without the lights at the bottom - yes it is cleaner, but I think that's a good thing. |

Now I am really jealous as I would love to photograph a volcano. This has a bit of an apocalyptic feel to it - as if these are three scientists who have discovered something going wrong with the earth. The dark contrasts adds to that feel and the smoke or cloud drifting across the scene adds to the atmosphere. Ian will have to throw something at me, because I do find the bright sun a distraction, but one that could be easily cropped out. An interesting image showing us something we don't see every day! |

Sophie, I think this comment is in the wrong place - I was a bit confused until I saw the same comment appeared about your own image. |

Plenty of bright Aussie sunshine that gives us an idea of the lay-out of the city waterfront. I do prefer a bit of cloud to break up clear blue skies (perhaps that's just because I'm from the UK, so used to seeing cloud), but if you don't want to add a little cloud texture I would suggest cropping off some of the sky as it's not adding anything to the image. I am also in agreement with Sanford that a small correction to the verticals would help, just a slight perspective adjustment to stop that far right tower from leaning in. |

Quite a lot to comment on here, as we now have three versions! I think your final Mono version is best - the original was a little flat in comparison, and in the colour version, the colours look a bit odd. Maybe that's how it was, but the water looks a bit too cyan. So, in the final mono version, I like the extra depth of contrast and the light and textures of the rocks. I would suggest lightening the water - add a white layer using an Overlay Blend Mode and paint it over the water. I think it would really lift the image. |

Then here is the cropped version. What do you think? |

It does look more square now, but we have now lost the windows either side. I've had a go from the original, just using the perspective tool in Photoshop, and what I do is pull in vertical and horizontal guidelines to help square things off. I can only add one image at a time, so first one us uncropped. |

Thanks Sophie. Planning is a major part of astro and I try to cover all those details in my talk. I gave it as a tutorial in my own club, and people said it was useful, so I decided to offer it more widely. |

Thanks Ian. My saying is that there is a difference between taking photos while you are out and going out to take photos. In the latter case, we start thinking about where to go and what's the best time. |

A nice and sharp image of the jets, with a good sky behind, so well done on the original capture. I agree that separation of Jet 3 would be nice, so why not have another go? You need the back end of a jet for the inverted aircraft - Jet 4 looks like the best option. Then just some blue for the sky which can be cloned from anywhere. Sometimes the automatic tools only go so far and you have to work on it manually. |

I like the blue reflections in the glass and the person adds a sense of scale. The original obviously needs perspective corrections and you have corrected the verticals OK, but I think your final version still needs a few final tweaks - a combination of perspective and skew adjustments on the height axis of the image would line up all the horizontals whilst keeping your verticals correct. |

Thanks Sanford. I would be happy to give a talk to your club for a very reasonable rate, just 1st class Trans-Atlantic flights! |
