76 May 24 Reply Thanks Jay. The white wings can be a problem in sunlight. This was a slightly overcast day which helped with the highlights. May 31st
76 May 24 Reply Thanks Ian. Bempton is a great location for sea-birds, so it does not take too much planning - simply turn up and shoot! May 31st
76 May 24 Reply Thanks Henriette. I managed a number of sharp images of the gannets in flight (and lots of blurry ones!), but the nesting material is the added bonus that made this one stand out a little. May 31st
76 May 24 Reply Thanks Sophie. Yes, we were on a cliff top, but not quite hanging over it! May 31st
76 May 24 Comment Always good to try something different and doing the rotation in camera is more difficult because you have to get the centre of rotation at the middle of the rose. I think your experiment has worked because we can still see detail in the rose, but the overlapping effects in the leaves makes some interesting patterns. May 8th
76 May 24 Comment Well he certainly looks like he is on a mission. The shallow depth of field separates him from the busy background, but we can still see enough to give us a sense of the occasion. This sort of image does not need much processing, but I would suggest cropping a bit more off the left to remove the first woman peering out - her face is the most 'in focus' and is a slight distraction from the star of the show. 76 May 24 Comment I like the rich purple in this image, and your cropping, rotating and darkening the background has made the most of the original capture. Did you use the new lens blur tool in Lightroom? You said it was windy and I think as a consequence the centre of the flower looks a little soft, which is magnified by the tight crop - the hairy bits on the right are super sharp however, so maybe that was the focus point? 76 May 24 Comment Sophie, you are turning into a nature photographer! This is a good capture of the bird taking off, it is sharp throughout and the bits of water streaming off its feet adds a bit of interest. I would be interested to see the technical details as an image like this is all about using the best camera settings, but your new lens looks to be working well. May 8th
76 May 24 Comment When I looked at the image I did not immediately think composite, so well done on making it look natural, and yes, I agree it is an improvement on the original. Hair cut-outs and tone matching all looks good, the shadows add interest to the background and I love the look on the child's face.

To remove a white edge between two darker areas, I would use a very small clone brush and clone from the lighter of the two dark areas using a darken blend mode. That way the cloning only goes over the white edge and does not bleed into the darker area.

76 May 24 Comment Ooooh - I am so jealous!! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, with no second chance to get it right, so well done on capturing something memorable. My only suggestion is to add a thin stroke line so we can see the edge of the frame. That and use a longer lens next time - you have plenty of time to save up for one! May 8th
