Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
76 Apr 23 Reply Trey - I thought about mentioning the slight overlap of the female skater's hand, but let it pass. However it's actually quite easy to shorten her arm a little to give some separation, and I think it does improve the image. Apr 28th
76 Apr 23 Reply Thanks Trey. I had to look up LMAO (though I had more or less worked it out myself!). Points on the right of the image noted and I'll bear them in mind. Apr 28th
76 Apr 23 Reply Thanks Henriette. I certainly did not think of periscopes, so it shows people see different things in images. Apr 28th
76 Apr 23 Reply Thanks for your comments Jay. The important thing to grasp with Photoshop is working with layers and masks - after that it's just building up experience. Apr 28th
76 Apr 23 Comment Henriette, I realise my original comments were rather negative, so in the interest of being a bit more constructive, here's the crop I suggested. I think it helps if the image concentrates on the tallest fronds, and there is a repetition in the shape of the lower fronds to the right which I did not notice in the original. I've also darkened the background red a little as I think it improves the separation. My suggestions, but as always it's your image. Apr 18th
76 Apr 23 Comment A very simple image, but there is nothing wrong with that. Nice and sharp on the flower (I'm surprised that F4.5 was enough to get all of the flower sharp). The square crop allows the flower to fill the frame, and excluded all the background distractions. Nothing more to say except well done. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Comment This might be what we call a Marmite image in the UK - one which people either love or hate. Unfortunately I don't think this one is for me as I find the foreground a bit too much of a jumble, with nothing that really holds the attention. For me, it might have been better to go in close for a macro shot of just one of the fronds. I do however think a square crop of the right 40% or so of the image would be better, as this would emphasise the tallest fronds as the main subject and also remove the dark background area. Sorry to be rather negative on this one, but I think we should say it as we see it, otherwise the dialogue serves no purpose. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Reply Thanks Ian. I really didn't spend much time on this - it was a quick edit to put up on Facebook immediately after the photoshoot. I just thought it would add a bit of fun to this month's images. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Reply Thanks Sophie. Your suggestion to blur the ferns a bit to add some depth of field is a good one, which I will consider if I do some more work on this image. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Comment This reminds me of the elephant patrol in Disney's Jungle Book, where the baby elephant is marching along at the back, imitating the adult elephants. A good nature image has the animals interacting with the environment and with each other, and we have that here in spades with the elephants and birds. I have to comment that I find the final image a little yellow, which as Sophie points out has robbed the sky of a bit of blue, though this is your processing choice. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Comment This looks like a piece of geology rather than a decaying tree. I really like the way you have brought out the colours and textures - the original had lots of texture, but the final image is a subtle improvement, bringing out a bit more of the texture and enhancing the colours without going over the top. The panoramic presentation is interesting as we, so overall a well seen, taken and processed image. Apr 15th
76 Apr 23 Comment This is an interesting image. There is nothing sharp or in focus, and yet it still conveys the mood of the town at night - as if you were a policeman on a stake-out somewhere. In fact, I would think loitering in your car at night with a camera is a good way to attract the attention of the police, but hopefully you got away with it. It's good to see something different which breaks with the normal conventions of what we think is good photography. Apr 14th
76 Apr 23 Comment I wouldn't call the result average, and if you received 4 acceptances the judges don't think it's average either! I agree with all of Ian's comments, but in particular that the skin tones are very well represented, which is difficult to do under the artificial lighting. A very well presented, colourful image that deserves its success in exhibitions. Apr 14th
