Ed -- I had to look this place up because I had not heard of it even though I've visited Vancouver Island a few times. I like the "fullness" of the setting; there are interesting details wherever you look. The sculpture on the left and the guy with the tripod seem to be looking at each other. I think the smiling lady in the red trousers adds a nice element. I love the dinosaur looming over everything.

Bruce -- I think your cropping decision is excellent. The seated main figure certainly tells a story: his position says defeat; his expression says hardship; the mis-matched shoes say poverty; and yet he gives us a thumbs-up. The mysterious figure on the left suggests consumerism which is out of reach for the poor man. Excellent image -- congratulations. |

Pinaki-- I agree with Isaac's tighter crop. The dynamic angle of the arm holding the bubble-maker adds to the liveliness of the scene. Nice work. |

Bev -- I agree with straightening the horizon. Being able to see her face adds interest and I like the position of her left foot. This event looks like a lot of fun for photograaphers. |

Isaac -- You did a heroic job capturing this wonderful image. I like the red shirt a lot, and the cracks in the pavement which sort of "frame" the main subject. Great work. |

Thanks, Isaac. I have to admit I like the crane because it seems to interact with the figure, but I appreciate your suggestion. |

Barbara--I have never visited Niagara Falls but I imagine it is a great location for photography. The mighty falls seems like a cloud-making machine, creating the atmosperic misty conditions you have captured. I like the evidence of civilization in the background, but I also think about how the indigenous people of the past must have viewed such an awesome display of water power. |

Mark--I love portaiture; this man has such an interesting face! The hands and arm are spectacular. The details of the watch and vest are terrific. I love your choice to isolate him (beautifully lit) against the black background. The attitude of his head really jazzes things up. Just a wonderful image; I looked at it for quite a while. |

Mark--I wouldn't change a thing. The dark land masses in the foreground are sillouetted nicely against the the slightly lighter hills behind; the sky contributes to the atmosphere with the beautiful lenticular cloud in the right corner. This is a lovely monochrome landscape. |

Maude--So, I guess the guy has finished his underworld shopping and is headed back to the surface. This is obviously a well-conceived and well-executed image which suggests all sorts of narratives. The contrast between the organic form of the rock walls and the very industrial-looking escalator is fascinating. The figure with his shopping bags creates the story. Congratulations on a wonderful image, Maude! I look forward to seeing more of your work. |

Peter-- The first thing I see is the cat's tattered right ear; he's a fighter for sure. I really like that the bars of the "frame" are wavy, (thanks for explaining the shadows on a blind); it's more dynamic. Honestly, this image suggests a horror movie to me: "The Attack of the Giant Feline", perhaps. I like the polarized effect on the cat. Very creative!

Robin-I have to admit this image had me flummoxed when I first saw it. I thought, "Why is the ambulance in the water? The waves behind the vehicle look like they will overpower it! What's going on here?!" It certainly echos D-Day with the wonderful ambulance from the era. Very creative! |

Thanks, Robin--Your point about the phone is interesting. I think she is photographing the scene behind me which is what's reflected in the window. I also like the fact that she is close to the edge of the image, as if she is about to walk out of it. |

Hello, Maude. Welcome to the group. I appreciate your thoughtful comment. You mention several things which I agree with, such as the important role of the woman. She is apart from the reflection, but I believe she is taking a picture of the actual scene which we cannot see. Also, I thought about the violence done to nature by such structures as dams and how we view them. This famous location is marketed to tourists as a triumph of engineering with little notice taken of the natural surroundings. |

Thanks, Peter. Mess, berserk, distrurbing...wow! I like it when an image provokes a strong reaction. I am enjoying the discussion about the woman on her phone. I like her there, but I find others' opinions interesting also. |

Thanks, Barbara. I realize this is an unconventional image and I was interested to hear what you all thought about it, but the idea of removing the figure on the left surprized me. I appreciate your unexpected suggestion, though. Thinking about different approaches is why this group is valuable. |
