Hi Randy -- I had to smile about your comment that this guy doesn't fit your idea of a gondolier. I guess even gondoliers are hipsters in the 21st century. I am having serious second thoughts about this image mostly because of the problem with the composition, but your characterization of him as "haughty" cracks me up. Thanks! |

Hi Randy -- At first glance I did not see the lighter "path" down the middle of the cobblestones. It would be nice to get the message of the path more strongly because it's a neat narrative. I really like the "arrow" of bright sunlight pointing to the path. The title seemed like it meant there was a character in the image who was lost and alone, but it turns out it applies to the photographer. Nice little twist! |

Hi Michael -- I know this place! I have also taken pictures of these spooky old snowsheds. When you know the history and how many people died there it is a sobering place. I think your image does everything it needs to to convey the atmosphere of strangeness that hangs over this unusual historic site. I like the regular repeating supports and the disappearing perspective. The monochrome is sort of silvery, which looks great. Nice shot! |

Hi Linda -- I love barren landscapes so this really appeals to me. The monochrome image is so much more interesting than the color original and it really suits the subject. I like the highlights on the (rocks?) on the left side. I think I would crop it somewhat tighter with less sky at the top and more of a "landscape"-type aspect ratio. I like the sky, though. |

Hi Peter -- I think your close-cropping is the right way to go. The story (for me) is the interesting-looking man and the obvious close relationship with a very photogenic dog. Even though the setting with the old fire truck is also very worthy of attention, the tight crop of man plus dog with a hint of the old machinery in the background really works for me. Congratulations on a splendid image! |

Hi Gerard -- I also love to photograph hydeangias because they are so interesting with the vein patterns in each petal. You made a very lovely image. I like the dark background. Not sure about the foot part. |

Hi Barbara -- In my opinion (since that is what this is about) the image would have more impact if the background wasn't so busy and the dark horse's head showed more detail. I also find myself wishing the point-of-view was a little more ahead of the horse so it is trotting toward the viewer instead of moving away. Other than that I think it's a nice image! |

Hi Michael - thanks for your candid and thorough response. I decided to use this image because the subject seemed like a good discussion piece. My thinking when doing the original crop was to show more of the setting for reference. Your crop is a much cleaner image and I take your point about the black tones in the boat. I still wish there were more details about the setting, but you've made a nice image that showcases the interesting gondolier. |
