39 Dec 22 Comment Ken, as I am late to the reviews there is not much to add to everyone else's comments. Cropping in as David suggests provides more emphasis to the train. There are such good tones, and the sharpened and depth of field all are strong elements here. Adding in the sky helps the drama of the story. Well done and well seen. Dec 17th
39 Dec 22 Comment This is very impactful in black and white. Love how the sky has been emphasized and the juxtaposition of nature vs man, the power of the storm vs the power lines. Good framing and the diagonals of the power lines provide tension. Maybe a small crop from the bottom? But really its great as it stands. Dec 17th
39 Dec 22 Comment Paul I like this conversion it definitely adds impact. The figure makes the image. The bright reflections of the street and cars could perhaps be burned back a touch. I also think you could crop a bit from the right - not as far as Fran's crop. See my quick edits to get an idea. Love the strong diagonal and the repetition of the columns and the shimmery reflections of the windows. Well seen and captured. Bottom line is you are the artist and can tell the story any way you like. Dec 17th
39 Dec 22 Comment Jerry I like the tilt in your converted image it really works. Great catchlights and the tonal range on her are really good. Having her eyes perfectly in focus is what it's all about, Her smile shines too.

I am not sure about the extent of the skin smoothing technique since the area around her eyes is left untouched and so does not correspond to the smoothness of the rest. Just one opinion.

Since you took this on the iPhone in portrait mode it explains the extremely shallow depth of field and why the necklace and back of her head is out of focus. It is an f/2.8 aperture. And it blurs the back ground for you as well, so you can experiment with that next time you try a portrait. For me there are some editing issues in the background it looks like there are some strange bright and dark areas that are not that evident in the colour version. Can this edit be smoothed out somehow. I think there is a mask involved however since the edges around the head and body are already soft it is probably hard to mask with finesse in order to darken that background.
Overall a good conversion.

39 Dec 22 Comment Fran I like the tonal range in the black and white version. Converting it this way removes all the distractions of the colour version and allows all the textures and lighting to shine. This has strong impact though One tiny niggle. I am like David about the processing of the area above the horses. In the colour version there is more clarity to the area, so maybe you can rework whatever you did in the area for a more subtle result. Otherwise a really good image. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Comment David this is a really well composed image and there is not much for me to add here. I like Fran's crop to help remove the smaller trees. The curve of the river leading the eye in is lovely. Well done, its a keeper. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply Paul you made me laugh. Thank you for the feedback. Considering all the good things said here I succeeded with my intent for this image. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply David, I did that final pop to emphasize the headlight at least 3 months after the initial edits. Aka just before submitting it here! Thanks for the comments. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply Jerry thanks, I will try that I believe you are right in taking that brightness down just a tiny bit. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply Fran the original is a bit different it was the first one in the set! Sorry. Shifting my point of view helped take a boring frame to a more interesting one. Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply Thank you Ken. I appreciate your comment Dec 16th
39 Dec 22 Reply Hi everyone. Yes, I posted the incorrect original! I was in a hurry my apologies. THis was the one before this! I will post the original matching image. Dec 12th
