Helen, there was no mention of cropping from the judge who wrote "Well seen and photographed. The composition is fantastic and the placement of the person really does add to the image. Great tonal range. Well done." I have some other shots from same shoot so I might play around with the crops as suggested by all.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Out of interest I submitted this in our last club (Lake Macquarie Camera Club) monthly comp and it was awarded HONOURS in Advanced Mono Division which is the top award outside of 'judges choice'. Personally I think a few more steps above the man would have been better composition wise but problem was there were no more steps for me to work with, so I should have shot again when he descended a few more. As we all know it is easy in retrospect. |

The composition is good with no petals clipped, maybe a little too tight in the frame but I guess there could have been distractions beyond the edges which I will never know and that is why you have cropped it so. I prefer the colour version as the colours are complimentary and vibrant and I get a greater appreciation of the detail in the middle. A little detail is lost in the mono conversion especially around the centre area of the petals. In both versions the background is subtle, nicely muted and very non distracting. |

I really like the density and quality in the tones especially the deep blacks. Contrast is strong and diagonal composition works well and your position to place the loco against the trees was a good choice as that background is passive and non distracting. The darkened sky top right I like; could you have done same to the light area above the prominent X-844? Other than that I can't offer any improvements. Plenty of detail evident in a an high impact image. |

The thing that grabs me the most is the texture especially in the seating. It also has a lovely luminosity; the caboose is just so filled with light and it provides strong modelling bringing out all the detail in the luggage racks, ceiling, floor and so on. The inclusion of a person seated somewhere in the image may have added a strong dynamic. Square format suits. Lucky you had the iphone as backup. The quality of phone pics is getting better and better. A bit more ooomph in the contrast I think would give it a lift. |

I really like the foreground area of diagonal tiles as there is a lot of interest there and it provides a strong lead up the aisle right to the alter and beyond. Fantastic detail in the ceiling, columns and chandeliers. The people become passive like innocent bystanders to fill the otherwise empty spaces. The potted plant on the right breaks the symmetry and I am not sure if that is good or bad but it does create a very minor distraction. Great tonality......and all on an iphone. I'm impressed. |

Nice composition with good fore, middle and background detail. The swirl in the foreground grabs my attention and takes me up the river to the bridge which is strategically placed on an intersecting third. Wispy sky adds extra value. Also has a nice range of tones which separates different sections of the image, defines the hills and hollows and makes it quite a gentle image; easy on the eye. |

The inclusion of the person adds depth and we know it is a photographer as a hint of photographic gear is visible. If the gear was not visible at all it would add a lot of mystery as the viewer would have more answers to the who, what, why. Not sure why you cropped so on the left. I like inclusion of all the building plus the tree as per John's suggestion but I do like your little crop off the top to get rid of some of the light sky. John's edit is sharper and has more detail overall which I like better. |
