I like the original color version, Joan, but I think your B&W rendering lacks contrast and punch. My edits include changing to a 4:3 format and cropping to include more of the cloudbank and to de-center the kayak, leveling the horizon, spot-treating to eliminate the distant man-made feature on the horizon at left and a few spots on the water, using gradient filters and orange and green color sliders to selectively boost contrast in the clouds and provide a greater range of tonal values on the beach and kayak. You were clearly confronted with an end-of-day lighting scenario, and I tried to preserve that feel but give the image a bit more oomph. |

I'm delighted that you were impressed with my "setting" shot, Terry. But it's just one of many dozens I took of the participants in the plein air event from various vantage points. I couldn't show all of them here, so I made some choices. I think the real stars in the "setting" shot are the landforms, which is why the area was declared a national monument more than a century ago. I also appreciate your treatment of the shot, though heavy manipulation yielding a surreal color-palette isn't something I'd be likely to do. As a retired career employee of the National Park Service (I was the monument's chief ranger for many years), my photography leans toward realism and its value as an educational rather than artistic medium. In addition, I've never been particularly interested in portrait photography, so this was rather new territory for me. |

Thanks for your comments, Mohan. I agree that the brightly illuminated back of the easel could be toned down a bit. Frankly, I hadn't even considered that. Of course, given the intensity and angle of the early morning Sun, I'd have to tone down the underside of the easel as well so it wouldn't appear as bright as the upright parts. |
