Hi Ally: Nothing portrays ice better than an ice-skating rink. It looks like so much fun. I know you were trying to show motion, but the left leg is so firmly planted on the ice that it looks like she is standing still and just swinging her right leg. I also find that if you crop out the two skaters on the left and about one or two inches on the right, it brings your focus to your subject better. It looks like a lovely day to skate. I hope you got to enjoy the ice some that day. |

Hello Connie: Your work of lightening and brightening improved you image quality a lot. This is a beautiful place, and one I would like to see on a hike. I understand the complications of horizontal and vertical but have no suggestions on how to improve this. My only comment would to have taken the shot so the falls are not in the middle. Love your technique for the water. Beautiful. |

Hi Fran: You have created a very interesting image. I see several oysters. After your description, I realize that they are just swirls of water and the rocks below. I love that you captured two rocks just peeking through before all the ice washed away. This is a wonderfully abstract image. I really like it. |

Hi Barbara: I love your picture. This is a technique that I have never seen. It's absolutely perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. I have recently started working with a light box, and this is a technique I am going to try as soon as I can find some suitable flowers. It's winter in Missouri. So there are no outdoor flowers and the florist shops and grocery stores have slip pickings. |

Hi Carole: I think your primary focus is on the lovely drops of icy water on the grass. Therefore, I would crop the image on the right side about an inch. The spot at the top does need to go as it draws the eye there immediately and not to the snow as Fran suggested. Otherwise, I think this is a perfect example of the assignment, and I love to see drops of water anytime. |

Thank you, Fran, for taking the time to work on my image. I like the closer crop and would probably take some off the top as well. I had to put the two pictures together in order to find your reference of the drip. Now that I see it, I agree that it takes away from the icicle. Both suggestions improve the image. Thank you. |

The instructor was Harold Davis. As I looked at his work, I felt like I finally found what I should be doing. It was exciting and new to me. I will definitely look at Lucy's website. Thank you so much for the information. |

What do you think about this? I removed all the yellow at the bottom and added a pastel background. |

Hi Peter: I commented on your image before, but for some reason it didn't record. I love macro work and the mystery of all the things we don't see. I like the hazy flowers around the yellow ball and the fact that the ball is part way out of the water. I have stared and stared at the yellow part and just can't make out what it is. That is what is fascinating about macro. I also like the bubbles and the contrast of the green and yellow. Interesting image.

Hi Peter: I think your subject matter is definitely the glacier and the eagle is just a nice side note. Perhaps a new name would be appropriate. If you can, I would also flip the eagle, so it is looking to the right of the image. I'm not sure why I say this, it just feels right to me. This is a very good reminder of the melting of the glaciers and could be used in a series of earth awareness pictures. Sounds like a great trip. |

Thank you for your comments, Bob. The instructor actually used a white background on all of his images. However, I think I agree with you. I had a different background prepared but decided to display this one. I think I will use the other one in the future. I will work with some of the other suggestions you have given me to try to improve the work further. Thank you. |

Greetings Helen: This is a most interesting image. My first thought was that this was a very symmetrical church, but it's not. I don't know how you could have captured this symmetrical and asymmetrical structure any better. I love this and spent a lot of time looking at all the differences from side to side. Nothing's the same. It's fascinating. I love it. Great job with your cell phone. |

Hi Howard: Your capture of these two birds was caught at just the right time. Around any feeder there is a good amount of territorial behavior between birds as seen here. I really like this shot. There are a couple areas that draw my eye. The first are the sparks of white just at the bottom of the feeder. More difficult to remove is all the white area behind the left side of the feeder. Once my eyes go there, I can't stop looking at all the white. Otherwise, I love the gestures of the birds and the interesting shape of the feeder. |

Hello Bob: If you don't shoot professional portraits, you should. This is great. The conversion to black and white was certainly the right choice. I'm sure that Steve would be honored to have a print of this quality for himself. Wonderful job. |
