Thank you Debbie. My friend made a small monopod that is handheld. I hook it into the lens and it gives me more stability when not shooting from the car. He said they sell them online.
Oh, the egret was taking off. I just happened to be focused on him at the right time. |

Excellent advice! I do need to sometimes use aperture priority or auto ISO. To do that I do need to learn my camera better! For me shooting on manual is easier but I'm only using probably a tenth of my camera's capability.

Thanks Damon.
I'm not sure I can answer your questions. I have slow reflexes which is not great when you're trying to photograph a bird in flight. I always shoot in manual. I probably was on F/11 because the bird was far away. As for the other settings, I can't remember why I chose those. Like why was I on 900 ISO when the sun was out??
I also get anxious when I have to react fast to a situation. I do wish birds would pose. I've gotten into the habit of shooting on continuous shutter mode. That helps a lot.
Buildings are easier to shoot, they don't move! |

Thanks Patrick.
This was taken at a wildlife area where you drive on a car route. No getting out of the car. I agree if the egret had turned around, it would have been a better picture but....😀
I hadn't noticed the horizon line being off. I was looking at the bird's take off area. Good suggestion. |

Thank you John.
I agree with you. I have a tendency to crop in to get a good look at the bird. I'll have to work on breaking that habit. |

Hi Dean
I'm an occasional nature photographer who goes out with a friend who is one and has all the necessary gear. We usually go out to wildlife areas where they have car routes and shoot out the car windows. No tripods allowed. I try to rest my camera on the base of the open window. I'm also limited by the reach of my 300 mm lens, and come home with hopefully one or two good images. |
