60 Oct 22 Comment It may not have a story, but it has a WHY. The emotional impact is for your client, in this case your wife. It's a moment in time for her. Oct 25th
60 Oct 22 Comment I like it. It's very much like your black rose. The flowers add some softness along with the bowl. However, not having any context, it's not telling a story to which I can attach feelings. This is an art piece--a very good art piece. I think that's the key to emotion, the picture needs to tell a story; something the viewer can relate to. You don't necessarily need to be that kind of photographer! I wish I could set up a still life, but I don't have the imagination. Oct 23rd
60 Oct 22 Comment Okay Damon, your first assignment is to realise what type of images bring you happiness. For me flowers always do it. When I look at a beautiful flower, I get more calm and tension eases. Get yourself somewhere you can relax. It might even be at your computer. Just stop, think, even meditate. Then take your camera and see if you can capture your mood. It might be rather techy, but it's how you feel. How does tech stuff make you feel? Go for the feeling here. Try this exercise: It makes me feel like I'm _____________.

I was a copywriter and would do similar exercises to get my clients' to realise their bottom line benefits. Oh, my husband is an engineer so I understand a tech mind.

On the tech side, I rarely use PS because it's so confusing. I tend to shut down when faced with so much to take in. I use only a fraction of my XT3 for the same reason. I use it basically as a manual camera. I know it has a quick menu, but don't use it. I've managed to assign the top dials to change my ISO and shutter speed. That's about it. I also take it to the camera store and pull the "old lady thing" and ask them to update all the firmware.

So what tip do you have for me?

60 Oct 22 Comment Damon, the dominant selective color I was mentioning was red. It's always a stand out! And, it's my favorite color. So you and I are at opposite poles. I need to be more technical and you want to get more emotional. Maybe we can help each other! I certainly need help with tech stuff. Oct 23rd
60 Oct 22 Reply Hi Damon. This image has visual impact because it's high key and a dominant selective color. It has artistic impact but not emotional impact for me. That's probably because I would be moved more by a rose in context.
How would you add emotional impact? I think that depends on the viewer. Someone who is more artistic may be emotionally drawn in by the artistic quality of the image. I think you should try to create an image that you are emotionally drawn to. Satisfy your own creativity.
I think that photography is so subjective that unless you have been commissioned to do something specific and asked your customer what they want to see and feel, you have to please yourself.
I also think your satisfaction and emotional attachment to the image will come through and the viewer will also have an emotional relationship with the image.
Did this image have an emotional impact to you?

60 Oct 22 Reply Try taking down the colors slightly. If you don't like it, keep the image the way it is. After all, it's your vision. Oct 22nd

60 Oct 22 Comment Rita, nice landscape image. The soft colors are appealing and calming. Was the grass that orange? Or, did you enhance it? Great capture. Well done. Oct 17th
60 Oct 22 Comment Damon, excellent image. The fact that you had to create every piece of it makes it even more amazing. Transposing the colors (red rose to black and black container to red) is very creative. Well done. Oct 17th
60 Oct 22 Comment Dean, I like this image. I agree with Damon that the tonal range of the picture screams for black and white. I also agree that the image could be lightened a bit. But be careful how and where you lighten. I think the re-do above is a bit flat. The tree is amazing. Oct 17th
