I agree that it would be nice to have the sky color centered over the building. You got me to thinking, this photo was taken in February when the sun was at its most southern point in the sky. Since the camera is aimed west, it would be interesting to go back around the time of the summer solstice in June to see how far north the sun has moved. I will make a note to do that next summer (although sunset will be at 9:30 or 10:00 PM, rather than 5:00 PM)! Thanks for the idea! |

The others said they thought it needed a stroke around the image, but I kind of like how the black edges just fade off into nothingness. It emphasizes the brightly lit areas. If the image had a stroke, to me, it would feel boxed in and a bit claustrophobic. Also, there is a black area on the right side of the photo which would make it look unbalanced. The image would probably need a crop on that side if the edge was clearly delineated. (I realize when printed the edges would be obvious and it would lose that fading feeling anyway). |

Hi Don. I don't think I have a lot of add that the others haven't already said. I like the shapes in the image and how they flow down through the center, but the parking lot, cars, and porta-potties are a distraction. The island is cut off a little too much at the bottom... I would like to see the white foamy water from the waves all the way around the bottom of the island.
I'm a little confused why the original seems to be a cropped version of the posted image. Did you intend for the cropped image to be the main posted image, or were you just trying to demonstrate something about the island? |

Hi Richard, I would consider this image to be a near miss at being a phenomenal image. I love the islands and the idea you captured in this image, but the devil is in the details. I think the idea of lighting the islands in the background was a good one, but not to the point of blowing out the sky. I like the little difference in the tone in the lighted area too. You might try going back to the original and lighting the area with a luminosity mask so you are not increasing the lightest pixels, only the blue/cyan ones. A little contrast in those clouds might bring out their beauty a little better.
Pete's idea of moving to the right and turning left slightly might work, but I like the sand bar in the lower right corner. And I would like to see more of the island on the left without it being cut off. I have this feeling of wanting to back up to show the entire island which would balance out the picture better.
And thirdly, the image looks a little crunchy to me, perhaps due to over-sharpening. It is a soft scene and does not require that level of sharpness.

Hi Lisa! A very nice re-processing of the image you posted in April 2022. The softer colors are more pleasing and give the sky a nice late-day feel. The lighter exposure brings out the subject in both the park and the sky. You still have the problem of the blown-out sky, as others mentioned. I think it would either require cloning or sky replacement to fix it, but a reshoot would be better if possible. Make sure you bracket your exposures for situations where the sky is in the shot and you have such vast differences in light levels. I can see shooting this scene late in the evening with a beautiful sky and the lights of the city just coming on, and the star at the top of the tree lit.
I do like your crop better on this one too. |

Ha ha! The gods must have been looking out for you! We also had mud like that on our wheels. Our driver was slip sliding around and appeared to not know how to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and I finally told him to let me drive (I've had lots of 4-wheel drive vehicles). But of course he said no. 😂😂
You are right... why would they rent you an off-road vehicle that you can't take off road! Weird! |

Hi Alex,
Night photography is my favorite, especially using a drone! These lights are great and I love how some of the blue-lighted areas look almost hazy, giving off a kind of an aura that adds to the feel of the picture. Nicely done! |

Hi Lou,
A beautiful area, and a wonderful time of year. Too bad you lost so much of that sky. Did you take multiple images with different exposures while at the exact same location? If so, you could combine them using an HDR algorithm to save the overexposed sky.
Also, you might try to bring out a little more of the yellows and oranges in the trees. It looks like you have lightened them, but I think a higher saturation in the yellow-orange-red range might work better.
The building you removed in the lower-left has left what looks like an old foundation. I recommend working on it a bit more to fill it in. There are lots of tree areas you can clone in there. |

Hi Pete. I love this image! Factory Butte is becoming a very popular and iconic location to shoot. It was rainy the days we were there too and I understand the difficulty in getting in to some of the places. Our 4-wheel drive wheels were sinking into the mud! But the inclement weather can certainly make for some beautiful and dramatic images! The lighting at the top of the butte is wonderful, and the rainbow is a grand addition!
I have a ground-level image which is almost the same as this composition, just missing a little of the background mountain range, and another image almost like this one that I took from up quite high. It was published in LPM and is one of my favorite images of all time! This area is an amazing place to go and photograph, and I hope to go back there someday. |
