Hi Alex. I really like the composition, and I like the red roof on the barn. You have selected a very difficult photo to shoot... directly into the sun (or almost directly). The sky has a lot of interest; it looks like there are some beautiful clouds. Unfortunately, the over-exposure blows out much of the sky on the right. Next time, try bracketing the exposure so you have one with a darker sky and can do an exposure blend to save more detail there!
Also, when you lightened the bottom of the image the highway was made much brighter. I would try to mask out that brightness along the road so it doesn't become the main subject. Don't allow it to steal the barn's thunder! :) |

Hi Don. I like the color in your final image. I agree cropping a little of the sky off the top might be good. I also think lightening the water was good, but I kind of like the black water at the very bottom of the image. I think if you could carry that a little higher so you don't have as much of the brown water it would look a little better. If you transition it into the green translucent-looking water instead of the brown it won't look like the water is muddy. |

Hi Lou. Oh, I'm so jealous. I so want to do more nighttime photography, it is my favorite, either drone or otherwise!! I've only been up with my drone at night once, and there wasn't enough light to really photograph anything.
I think there was a little discussion earlier about whether it is ok to fly at night. I need to make sure I have the necessary lights attached if I do it.
I like the removal of the lamps at the top of the tower. I also really like the composition! It is minor, but there is a light line down the left side of the building in the center background caused by the sharpening. I would suggest trying to remove it.
You inspire me to go out and get some nighttime city images! |

Hi Richard. Welcome to the group. Lovely image! I love the sky here... well done! In what part of Iceland is this bridge?
Looks like there is going to be more volcano images coming out of Iceland pretty soon! Maybe even in the snow!! |

Hi Pete. Very nice composition. I like that some of the image is still green. I think the early fall when there is a mixture of colors, some trees still green, makes for more interesting fall photos!
It does seem to have a bit of a weird texture. At first, I thought it was maybe over-sharpened, but looking at your original, I see it was there too, although not as strong as in the processed image. I don't know what might be causing this... it doesn't seem to be a focusing issue.

Thanks so much, Alex. When I lived in southern California, I really missed the fall colors! I have more than enough now! :)
I agree, getting closer would be cool too. Straight-down shots, or almost straight-down, might provide some interesting photos! I'm afraid that's not going to happen though. I guess I could fly over and do it... they don't own the air... as long as I take off from off the grounds. But it is quite a long way (whether it looks like it or not) and I would need more battery than I currently have (I think I need new batteries, they only seem to last 10 or 15 minutes) |

Thanks, Don. I have definitely been wanting zoom lenses on my drone... almost every time I fly.
You are correct, I don't usually replace skies. I have nothing against people who do it, I just don't typically do it myself (and if I do, I make it known that's what I did). See my comment to Pete about the large amount of sky. I tried cropping it down, but felt the image looked less expansive and closed in.

Hi Pete. I submitted this photo to Landscape Photography Magazine and they published it on their website (still remains to be seen if they are going to publish it in their magazine). Here is the link if you are interested https://landscapephotographymagazine.com/13/11/2023/holy-hill-erin-wisconsin-usa/
Notice I had cloned trees into the area you mentioned. We were thinking alike! :)
I also cropped off some of the sky to see how it looked but put it back before submitting for publishing. I think part of the strength in this image is the expansive look, and I felt it suddenly seemed like a smaller world when the sky was cropped down. I let it sit on my screen for a while and came back and looked at it several times, and decided "nope, sky has gotta stay" (sometimes it is so helpful to walk away for a while and come back and look... I'll bet you sometimes do the same!) |

Thanks, Lou! Depth of field is so much easier with the wide-angle lens on the drone, isn't it! I don't even worry about it when I'm flying. |

What fun, Lisa! The fun colors make a very interesting photo. I agree about the highway, too bad it is so distracting, but the mountains are lovelier in this direction. I particularly like the shadows, but too bad they are overlapping. Unfortunately moving around wouldn't change that very much, nor would shooting at a different time of day (you would just lose the long shadows). I think it would take a different time of year. I also like the people in the photo, it shows the scale and provides interest.
I think I like the ground-level photo the best! It has more impact. Just goes to show that getting up high with the drone is fun, but sometimes you don't need to to get the best shot! |
