Thanks for your comments, Mike. Yes, in fact as the story goes, Amphitrite did not want to marry Poseidon. Although rejected, Poseidon refused to abandon his quest, sending many sea creatures to search for her. She was located by the dolphin god Delphin, who persuaded her to accept Poseidon. Delphin was rewarded when Poseidon made him a constellation, Delphinus. So the story goes.
Greek mythology was the source of a lot of art from the Renaissance onward. I was friends with an artist who painted a number of watercolors based on these ancient stories. She inspired me to do extensive research on these subjects. |

Thank you for your commnets, Joan. Yes, the image looks better if cropped to the format 5x7 (about 15% off the bottom).
Amphitrite, of course, is the bride of Poseiden. As the legend goes, he choose her from among her sisters during a dance. But she proved elusive and fled to Atlas, on the edge of the world, where she hid among the barnacles and seaweed. Poseiden persisted, sending Delphin (a pet dolphin) to find her, and eventually bring her back to be married to Poseidin. We are seeing her under her disguise. I think if would take major plastic surgery to make her beautiful at this point. It would also be a retoucher's nightmare. |
