I like this image a lot. I played around with some long exposures this summer, but I was photographic water scenes. I have been meaning to expand it to landscape scenes also and this image is all the more reason to do so.
The exposure is great and I like the compositon - how you balance out the photo with the trees in the background. Wonderfully done! |

I like the infrared but I think the trees are the more dominant subjects - perhaps tone them down just a bit and brighten the house just a bit. Or just brightem the entire image overall?
This reminds me of a scene from a Kurasawa movie. It's a very nice and peaceful composition.

Hi Kirsti - it's hard to tell on my monitor, but I don't think the image is too dark, I think it works perfectly. The view outside the window could have been a happy and cheery contrast to the dilapidating interior, but to me the view is not much more hopeful than what's on the inside - to me it heightens the sense of hopelessness. The two things I like about the photo the most are the off-centering of the window, and then the unknown of what lies around that corner - that is the most ominous feeling I get when looking at the photo, It's really great that you go on those photo shoots with your club. A really impressive image.

Hi Jeff,
You've inspired me to go after some morning mist shots - there are a lot of opportunities where I live. My only comment is that my eye is drawn immediately to the foreground grass and I wonder if it might work to darken that patch of grass and highlight the mist a little more? Otherwise, a wonderfully atmospheric scene! |

Hi Ed - flipping it was definitely a good call on your part. I fooled around with the brightness of the chimney and steps but felt it is probably more a personal choice on editing the contrast.
I was looking at the empty space in the upper left so I cropped it, not based on the golden sprial, but rather the golden ratio. (cropped version attached) It eliminated some of the open space. I think either the golden spiral or golden ratio works better than thirds as you mentioned.
Nice photo to keep the eye moving down the stairs.

Thanks, Kirsti. I think your version is a good mix between my original and Ed's processing. I appreciate it. I'll probably work on the color version for my own enjoyment and framing. |

Thanks, Ed. I knew I did not get the best result when I converted it to B&W. And I agree the color version is probably better, and yes, it was early morning light. But I wanted one B&W version and this was probably the best one. I think your processing version is more in line with what I was looking for - thanks for taking the time to work on it. |
