Hi Ed,
I see what you are pointing out regarding the top being cut off and incomplete. I hadn't noticed that. I think I'll stop over to this building again in a few weeks when I'm visiting my son again in NYC and see if I can improve it.
Thanks for your feedback.

I like the concept of the photo a lot. For my eye, I'm having a hard time distinguishing the depth within the photo. All of the tones or shadows blend together making judging the distance from the foreground to background difficult for me. Pretty cool setting, though. |

The surfer's age is hard for me to take a guess at, but certainly anyone over 40 or 50 who can balance themselves on a surfboard is doing something right, and the small wave makes be think he's at his limit - so I think your photo works from that standpoint.
My only technical observation is that the photo looks a little soft, so maybe it could be corrected with Topaz Sharpen, or some similar tool?

I still like the original composition, though I think your suggestion would work also. Thanks. |

I have the same reaction regarding the contrast between the foreground and sky. I think a little more exposure or opening of the shadows on the boats would be beneficial. The framing of the boats is very effective. |

The compositon in the final version is terrific. And you once again showed a wonderful feel for facial expressions that are full of wonder and emotion. I like also how you blocked out the logo on the boys hat; in the original version it really stands out and it would have been a distraction in the final version. You must be very quick with your camera to catch such instantaneous expressions. |

I absolutely love this photo. There is so much to it. My first impression was that of some dystopian world, but that immediately gave way to the more structured pattern of the cars - did you wait for that kind of arrangement or was that happenstance? whatever the case, it works. The highway seems to be floating in space. The leading lines into the photo are extremely effective.
And I too appreciate the introduction to Cole Thompson, I was not familiar with him. I took an online course through this club and one of the areas that was discussed was rule breaking - it is a good concept to keep in mind. Thanks for sharing such a though provoking photo! |

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Kirsti, I'm glad you noticed the rhythm and Jeff, I isolated just the fire escape and it is an interesting picture within a picture.
Stephen, your observation is very astute. Yes, I shot "up"and then tried to adjust for the converging lines. I will look at similar pictures to see how other photographers handle it. There is a saying that says the enemy of good is better - I think I'm guilty of that here! And yes, this location is near where my son lives in NYC and I can return there whenver I visit to try to improve the photo.
