Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
49 Nov 24 Comment Thanks for all the great feedback everyone - I sure do enjoy the dialogue! I've been thinking on the different points made here and my takeaway, particularly regarding the blown out section of the sky (and infractions like that in general), is to try and put more focus when looking at images on the art / mood / feeling of the image as a whole, and the feeling(s) it evokes.

Is the sky blown out? Sure! The question is, does it matter? I have a tendency to go straight to those types of things when evaluating other images, and probably don't put as much attention as I should to those art / mood / feeling points that most of the time anyway, are what the photographer is trying to convey.

OK, my lesson learned for this month is to try and see the forest through the trees moving forward, at least a little bit ? I hope you all (that are in the US and celebrating it) have a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

49 Nov 24 Reply Thanks for your thoughts Alan. About 1 in 20 I see it executed in a way that I like it. My challenge with it is that I usually find the sun to be the dominating focus of the image, which generally is not the point. Definitely had a little luck on my side when capturing this one! 49 Nov 24 Comment Hi Peggy

This is a beautiful location. It's hard to beat an s-curve in a river running off into a corner with beautiful northeastern fall foliage sprinkled in there!

A few consideration points - the blues and greens feel a little heavy. I tried the white balance selector on some of those nice rocks bottom middle of the image and that did the trick. A subtle vignette seemed help my attention on that awesome river too.

Thanks for sharing!

49 Nov 24 Comment Hey Alan

Go figure right?! (regarding the shutter speed). The softness of the image aside, I like it. It's well exposed, from blacks all the way through to the whites and I like the room you've left in front of the swan to move into.

49 Nov 24 Comment Hi David

Midday light can certainly be a challenge to capture in, but if you wouldn't have mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed - nicely done!

I like the busyness you've captured here, from the colors and endless interactions of the different lines and windows of the building to the people, boats, and everything else. Depending on your intent for this image, you could consider cropping the left side in a bit, to keep the viewer's eye focused on the busyness, but that depends on your intent, and I could certainly see an argument that the space on the left, balances that stretch of building on the right.

Thanks for sharing!

49 Nov 24 Comment Hi Mark

Not sure if all your write-up made it to the post or not, your last sentence seems like it's missing part of what you intended to say.

Anyway, I do like the vibrant colors, and against that blue sky I can see why they caught your attention. The angle has my eye going straight to this gal's butt, which if that was the intent - well done! If not, a consideration for next time would be to try getting a little higher perspective. As it's framed, it feels like you took the shot from your knee and shot right at waste level.

As to the interaction between these two, something that might help to reinforce that message would be to ensure capturing a shot w/the kiddo's face exposed.

The blacks of her shirt, hat and purse are blown out, resulting in a loss of detail, which is something to watch moving forward.

49 Nov 24 Comment Hi Craig

I really like the clouds you've captured, the vertical shadows on the left are awesome, and I like the significant contrast between the highlights on the left (which according to the histogram aren't blown out) and shadows on the right.

A few suggestions, straighten the horizon (it's higher on the left), clone out the bug/plan/artifact in the sky and the sensor spots on the right, and it looks like there's something going on at the end of the pier (a clone job or something?).

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad my intent translated ? Good catch on the lens flare on Holly's shoulder, that's why I love these critiques, seems I always miss something that's super obvious once pointed out, that I miss during the initial processing.
