Hi Peggy
I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said. This looks like a place I'd like to be!
Thanks
Josh

Hi Alan
This is what I get for being late to the game! I agree with the feedback provided so far. The only thing I'd toss in is to see if you can pull any detail out of the mallard's head. I realize they're super shiny, and almost reflective in the right light, so that may not be an option, but the front part of his mug is pretty dark.
Thanks
Josh

Good Morning David
I don't have much to offer-up here that hasn't already been said. I'm with leaving the crop as is too. The light blue sky balances out the deep oranges that dominate the right side and as to the buildings, they're under-emphasized enough that they don't distract my eye. At a quick first glance, I almost don't even notice them as they blend in with the trees.
Nice capture!

Hi Stephen
This image is super cool! The rich, contrasting, colors you've got here work really well together, and as the others have pointed out, the geometric shapes and lines are superb. It's hard to zoom in much the limited file size we can share, but it appears to be tac-sharp too.
The little bit of fog creeping in over the top of that middle building is great too - very well done!
I'm curious about the white on the sides, is that as captured, or did you crop building out on the right and add white? It creates a nice frame and a unique composition that is very unique. |

Hi Craig
This image is apropos given the discussion on my image. I don't mind the background details, they've been deemphasized enough that I don't find them distracting, and where else are you going to find a worn-out old Cat!
One point of consideration I'll offer-up is the treatment to the subject. It feels a little overly Sharp or "Clarity"ied, and possibly Textured. It's got kind of a synthetic grainy look about it, at least on my screen, which you might be mindful of. Or maybe you were, and that was the whole point 😉 |

Good Morning Craig
Thanks for the alternative perspective, it's what I was trying to achieve but obviously didn't hit the mark the all 😉 It's why we keep working on improving! Oh, and another round would have been great!
My Project 365 (here's the rabbit hole if you dare: https://www.flickr.com/photos/152708602@N07/) started about learning how to more efficiently use my camera, understand using manual mode, and really get to know the photographic trifecta of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as second nature. That was 3-bodies ago, so I think we can safely say that ship has set sail. It then became kind of a commentary from the sidelines of my day-to-day life. At this point, I suppose it's still that, along with a hesitancy to break my 2,369-day streak (which is actually longer, I'm a few weeks behind on posting) of a picture a day.
Oh, and thanks for the comparison, I hadn't heard of Sam Falk, but it looks like he was quite the photographer!
Alright, enough rambling from this guy, thanks all for feedback and apologies for my delayed responses. |

Good Morning to you too Stephen!
Thank you for chiming in on my image with the feedback and the edit. To not overwhelm the thread here with repeating myself, please my responses above to David and Alan.
Thanks again
Josh

Hey Alan * (& David)! Man, thanks for the second take on my portrait of John. You did keep it subtle, which I appreciate, but I think the maker's eye keeps taking me to those windows. By pushing them to be darker, it creates artifacts in them that once I saw, I couldn't stop noticing (and be distracted by even more than the brightness). Based David's feedback too, I probably need to just move past that 😉
Thanks again gents, I always appreciate the candid feedback!

Good Morning David! Thank you for taking a look at my image and providing feedback, I'm always grateful.
I was pleased with the light on John too, and I don't even mind the little starburst over his shoulder, but the brightness of the background does compete a bit. As I suspect you noticed, there's already gradients showing up in the windows from me cutting highlights and exposure and pushing it anymore, seemed to make the image distracting, to my eye anyway.
As far as the distraction factor of the background, you're not wrong, but at the same time, this image is about having a drink with a friend in a bar. Some of the details it contains add a little to the warm, welcoming feeling and overall setting, so I'm OK with them. f/2.8 is the fastest glass I own, maybe if I ever pick up the 50 or 85mm f/1.2, they'd do a better job of bokeh and throwing everything else out of focus. |
