49 Jan 24 Reply Good Morning Craig!

Thanks for the kind words sir. I've had a thing about wide open apertures since I got more seriously into photography 8 or so years back, especially w/portraiture. I feel it can really add something to an image, if executed properly, which I manage every now and again.

As far as the "kiddo" moniker, I do, both for Uki and my son, Monroe. My reason for using it here is that for the past few years Uki has decided she's (they're) most comfortable as a they/them. This was not an easy thing to get my brain trained to accept, let alone naturally use the proper verbiage. Writings like this are a good example of where I have to be cognizant as there is no word to describe your genderless child in our language, aside from "child", which has a cold feeling to it, plus a few others I use jest with them. Granted, there are other nicknames too, but kiddo seemed like the most respectful to them, while still making my meaning clear to you all.

49 Jan 24 Reply Thanks for the feedback David - I think you and Stephen are colluding ;) Not sure if you noticed, but he already fixed some of what you suggested, I like it! I'll give the generative fill in PS a try and remove that triangle extending from her head.

Thanks for the feedback, I sure appreciate it!

49 Jan 24 Reply Good morning Stephen! Sure thing man, it looks like a place I could settle into too. For what it's worth, I think you absolutely captured the mood. I only mentioned the bright spot because it's, well, the whole point of these critiques 😉 Jan 14th
49 Jan 24 Comment Hi Peggy - Awesome image! If you wouldn't have mentioned it was a penitentiary, I'd have thought it was some ancient cellar in a castle in Europe somewhere, it's got a very cozy feel to it.

I think Stephen hit the nail on the head about the reason for the softness, but it's not a bad effect for this image, it adds to the feeling of it.

The other idea I'd toss out there would be to apply a vignette to this and while doing so, get rid of the blue tinting on the outside left and right edges - they add a coldness that conflicts with the otherwise warm and cozy feeling this image evokes.

49 Jan 24 Comment Hi Alan - nice image. It's very clearly composed in a way that my eye knows exactly what the image is about, and you've chosen an aperture that gives me enough detail to see what else is going on but doesn't put that detail in focus in a way that would cause those details to compete with the subject.

Two nitpicky things to consider, there is some minor clipping of the blacks, including on the subject, which bumping up Shadows just a hair addresses. Pull the crop in from the right to eliminate that sliver of light between the edge of the building and the right edge of the image.

49 Jan 24 Comment Hi David - I think I'm leaning towards Stephen's opinion on this one. That foreground shape of the land and the texture is amazing. My lizard brain keeps telling me I'm looking at part of a Komodo dragon or something. I really like how you've processed it and I think monochrome treatment makes this image more about the geography than the sunset.

The empty space on the top right of the sky wasn't doing it for me, so I tried cropping down a bit, which does leave the nice sunset, but emphasizes the ground a bit more. Awesome image!

49 Jan 24 Reply I was just looking at this again in LR and given there's virtually no whites in this image (if you look on the histogram), perhaps instead of darkening the window, playing bringing a little more light into other aspects of the image - along the lines of what David's alluding to. 49 Jan 24 Comment Hey Stephen - nice capture sir. Looks like an intimate place to have a nice beverage with someone. The warm tones really contribute to that feeling and the little highlights of detail throughout the image, e.g., the molding on the ceiling, the detail on the walls, and the patterns on the front of the bar, makes me want to explore it.

The only thing I'd offer-up would be to play with bringing the brightness of the window down a bit. It's interesting (but not the most interesting thing about the shot), and it's also the brightest thing in the image so my eye jumps to it.

49 Jan 24 Comment Hi Craig - I like your image. It reminds me of a jelly fish, with its tentacles drawn down to the bottom left. The sharp bits of detail you have dancing from bottom left up into the image are cool too. Not sure if it's a byproduct of the lights, but there are a few little light speckled artifacts that you might clone out, e.g., on the top left by the top of that red line.

Your light painting reminded me of one of the folks I follow on Flickr that does a lot of it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/113375614@N02/

49 Jan 24 Comment Hi Owen - nice image man! I like how you've composed the traffic lights pulling us into the shot from the bottom corner and you've got these great leading lines taking us to the main show. You've also captured some excellent colors in those firework - I particularly like the purple.

I like the little bit of detail and light that you've left in the clouds too, it's not distracting, but way more interesting than a pure black sky.

I'd fix that clone job on the right side of the sunset sky but other than that, this is a dandy!

49 Jan 24 Reply Interesting, OK - I'll have to give it a try one of these days.

Thanks again!

49 Jan 24 Reply Haha, there ya' go!

So did you use content aware fill or what? I'm curious how you cloned those items out so effectively?

49 Jan 24 Reply Man... nice edit!! Not sure how you did the removal, but it looks amazing, and not in the kind of way where it's like ya', that looks fine, but it's still totally obvious something has been removed. You made it look like it was never there!

I very much agree with your thoughts that those elements were distracting too, the focus is now completely on Uki. I guess the one question this revised version now begs is, "Why is she holding chopsticks?!" ;)

Thanks for the feedback Stephen, very much appreciated sir!
