Craig, Stephen, and Alan - thank you for the feedback. Three similar suggestions seemed to warrant throwing a minute at re-processing this as a monochrome, so here ya' go. I did tinker w/the crop size a bit too and settled on a bit more of the negative space sky to help keep the emphasis on the landscape (I did pull the sides in a bit though), rather than cropping the sky down and shifting the focus to Roo. I'd love to hear any additional thoughts on the different version. |

Hi David, thanks for taking the time to provide feedback on my image, I really appreciate it. I can't recall if I tried cropping down from the top when I originally processed it or not, but it's definitely worth revisiting. Here's a revised version and I like it too, I feel like it shifts the focus of the image to be more focused on my son, than the islands - not a bad thing, but that one simple change transitioned the whole meaning of the image for me. |

Hi Alan. I like your image. The old, lichen covered wood of that steeple really sets the tone of the image with that gnarly looking bird. It looks to me like you pulled some nice detail out of the bird too, those feathers are great. The only thing that struck me was that it feels a little heavy-handed w/the saturation, particularly the blue and yellow. I commend you pivoting from your church to bird photography on the fly like that too, it's easy to miss opportunities like that. |

Hi David, this is beautiful. Man, those clouds and sun rays are something! The complimentary blues and yellows throughout the image work really well too. The whole near/far style of composition is something that I struggle with doing effectively, but am intrigued by and interested in improving myself, so the feedback concerning that's been provided here is helpful for me too. One flower tip that I've picked-up over the years, after being scolded by the gardeners in the family, go ahead and dead-head any flowers that have lost their pedals before you take the shot. It often strengthens the image and is way easier than cleaning it up in post. |

Hi Craig. Excellent timing on capturing this composition - symmetry with two animals is quite the achievement! The color of these birds is quite striking too. The crop feels like it might be a little tight, if you have any real estate around the birds to expand, it might be worth playing with. The only other thing I'd offer-up would be to bring the legs back into focus, at least partially. The bodies and head are nice and sharp and the legs noticeably softer. Nice image! |

Hi Owen. I seem to be a bit late to the party! I do agree with Craig's crop, it shifts the emphasis of the image from the water to the kayaker and "feels" more well composed, whatever that means. Not sure what subject tracking, focus setting (continuous, possibly w/back-button focus) and burst mode you were using, but there may be options w/in those that would help you achieve the shot you're after. One thing no one else has mentioned that may help too, especially w/the long glass, is using a tripod. Thanks for sharing! |
