Mark, thank you for the thoughtful commentary.
Attached is the original from the camera. My post processing is limited and is all in Lightroom. I used the 'auto' feature as it gets the RAW file closer to how I recall the scene and invoked the lens corrections for this lens. I then further removed highlights, moving the slider to -100. The foreground was still too bright so I used a horizontal filter mask and further reduced the foreground whites and highlights. The distracting reflections on the hillside were cloned out. The texture were adjusted (increased to +20).
I played around with the crop and decided that the fishermen looked more isolated and lost with more foreground. I then selected the standard Lightroom B&W preset BW08.
At first I did my usual 'let's move each slider to see what it does with this picture' and then reset them all apart from those described above. |

Hi Ed, I like these goose pictures of yours. They are interesting creatures.
I agree with Paul that there is motion blur. The rule of thumb I use is SS should be faster than 1/focal length (IE 1/500th sec in this example). An aperture of f/8 would have kept you in the same ball park for ISO and given good depth of focus.
It is interesting to see how the additional background in Darcy's crop adds to the composition. |

Paul, great shot of foreboding skies and boats waiting for what the storm brings. Very evocative - it looks so cold and the sky looks positively livid.
I would be very nervous at that time if I owned a valuable boat in Bayfield Marina!

Mark, both the original and the final image are great shots for different reasons. The original shows a spectacular water feature in a harsh environment - the grass is struggling to establish itself on the rocky terrain as the water cuts through the (presumably) young rock.
The Narrows section selected shows wonderful subtle colors in the rocks and vegetation (can't tell if it is grass or lichen) as the water rushes by creating a misty microenvironment. You state that this image (The Narrows) was the important one, it would be interesting to hear how you came to that decision.

Interesting shot, Darcy. The implications of Palm Springs and cacti with snow on takes some thinking about. This is a great exposure with good detail in the snow and on the cactus. The other cactus isn't a distraction to me.
The only improvement I can think of would be if the snow was freshly fallen (IE with out the footprints etc). |
