Mark,
Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I took several different pictures of the dead tree and decided that those with more background appeared to diminish the scale of the root structure. I agree it is a little too cramped. I did reduce the highlights slightly in post to reduce the impact of the background. I am thinking (after seeing Dawn's picture this month) that a fill-in in front of the roots may help.
I am not sure why the picture is not titled. I know I had some trouble getting the image down to <1MB in LRC. A recent LRC update seems to have made the export picture function temperamental so it will not constrain the image below a certain size (usually 2.5 - 5 mb) and it has to be gamed. After fighting with it I probably forgot to add the text to name the pic. |

Unqualified as I am to comment on this picture, I can recognize the subtlety, restraint and understanding used to create this natural looking image.
The picture is captivating and it is interesting trying to figure out the sheer scale of the view.
In comparing the original and the final versions, I prefer the lower right hand portion of the final version (which better shows the intriguing road to 'somewhere') and the upper left hand portion of the original (which seems to have more detail in the clouds etc).
Technically there is so much to learn from how this image was created. It is another masterclass from Mark. |

I think this is an excellent B&W picture. The solid grays of the water and darker rocks of the stacks are very brooding. The birds appearing to fly away imply a general abandonment of the scene. It is definitely more interesting than the color original.
Did you use a tripod for this? (I would be interested in how you like the 100-500 RF lens). |

You have a great eye for the people moment. The concentration that is directed at making fresh pasta adds to the image (and makes me glad I buy mine in a packet). The quality of the light is like a classic painting and the background could only be found in Italy!
The only improvement I would suggest would be a reflector to put some more light onto the face (maybe a little up from the LH side of the image?) although this would destroy the spontaneity of the capture.
Make me want to go to Italy again! |

It is hard to capture the grandeur of mountains in a single frame. The clear sky around the mountain and the 2 lone clouds way below the peak help to convey the scale of the mountain. For this reason I actually prefer the additional headroom of the original. |

Dawn,
This is a great image. It commands your attention and then reveals the details of this complex exposure. I have many pictures from a trip there a couple of years ago and found it very hard to get all the elements right as in your picture. The additional light on the side of the tree is magic. Your post processing has improved what is a very strong original.
Another great place to visit for night photography is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, a couple of hours south west of Joshua Tree. |
