Mark,
Thank you for the detailed reply. This is very interesting and helpful, especially the insights given to the deliberation and planning that went into the image capture.

The geology of the western USA is amazing to me (I grew up in England). The way these mountains rise from the flat valley floor is exactly the kind of view that would have made me stop the car and take a picture also.
It is often hard to capture the sheer scale and grandeur of the terrain and I think you have succeeded with this picture. |

Without the backstory this is a well produced, interesting picture of old buildings. With the back story it is a heartbreaking reminder of the long impact of war on a region.
In telling its story, this picture makes me realize that our hobby of photography has a relevance and importance. |

Mark is able to recognize a great picture within a good one. That this remarkable picture came from the original reveals insight and imagination.
It would be helpful to know more about the thought process that went from original intent (at image capture) to final composition. |

This picture shows the ancient nature of the rocks in an interesting way. The moss growing on them, the hole blasted through them that hasn't affected their integrity. And the view of the other end of the tunnel draws you into the picture.

This is a great photo. It is 3 dimensional - from the detail in the foreground rocks to the silhouette of the mountains in the back ground - there is so much to look at. It makes me want to go there and see it for myself!
Is the original picture the Raw file from the camera? It looks spectacular and the changes made to the final shot appear to be subtle. |
