Hi Dom - I think the subject is interesting and I like the composition. To my eye, the tonal range seems fine and I do get a sense of depth looking at the image. One of my favorite parts of the image is the debris at the bottom of the doorway. A slight increase in the exposure might be worth a test to better see the details in the debris and the walls. |

Thanks for the comments Ed. It does seem that the bright white sky has some pluses and minuses from viewers' perspectives. I did look at a cloudy sky version but the soft clouds didn't seem to mesh with the harsh black landscape. I might try a thin, white border and see how that looks to me. As I mentioned to Dom, I found myself liking the feeling of resolving the image when I see it as the sky instead of a bright white rectangle. Thanks again for your observations. |

Hi Dom and thanks for the comments. I understand the confusion about the white rectangle sky. I can look at that and sometimes it throws me off too. However, I like the satisfaction (for me) when my eyes resolve the mystery and the scene settles in to place. I appreciate the technical suggestion about straightening the road edges. That has proven surprisingly difficult for me to do. Back to the drawing board. |

Hi Ed - I think your image does communicate the message of "never too old". The lightening vignette reinforces the "old" theme. My only suggestions would be to clone out the little black object in the water (between the surfboard and bottom right corner of the image) and the strip of land in the background. |

Thanks Robert - I was on an overpass and quickly grabbed several shots and I liked this arrangement of cars the best, of the images I got. I was nervous that the freeway drivers might think someone was up there with a gun and I'd be inadvertently responsible for an accident! |

Hi Robert - This is a very nice image that works really well in black and white with the great lines and tonal range. You really seem to have a picture in a picture if you were to just use the fire escape section of the building but that's a shot for another time! |

Hi Al - First, you've picked a great title for this image! I like the way the sisters are positioned in the frame. The image seems dark but not to the point of losing detail. It may be interesting to slightly increase the exposure on the boats to even better portray the wear and textures and to highlight even more contrast in that part of the image to provide greater separation from the background. |

Hi Kirsti - I really appreciate the processing you've done to convert this image to its current form. I love the composition and wouldn't change a thing about that element of the photo. One suggestion to consider would be to reduce the exposure of the boy just a bit. I think that would serve to reduce his prominence in the image plus create a little more depth without diminishing his role in the image's message. |

Thank you Kirsti. Also, thanks for the catch of those white spots in the black areas. I'm glad you like Cole Thompson. A couple of years ago, two of my fellow club members told me they thought I would like him. I was a little hesitant at first because he was such a strong advocate of disregarding all the photo "rules". I know rules have helped me make better images than when I didn't know the rules. That said, I certainly appreciate those who can break rules and make interesting images. |
