Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
86 Jul 22 Comment Pat, I understand the comments about losing detail in the sky and that may be something you don't like or think should be different (which is ok), but I wanted to expand on my comments to Quang- this image is not meant to reproduce the scene as it was and show you exactly what I saw at the time. It's my interpretation or version of the original scene that I created which doesn't include detail in the clouds (something I intentionally did with the filter I used). I think it's hard to evaluate these types of images in the usual manner (or compare them to the original- which you wouldn't normally see). Just my opinion. Yes, if it went into a traditional competition, they could take off for the loss of detail in the clouds. Title: Is mine the better view? Jul 21st
86 Jul 22 Reply Hi Kieu-Hahn,

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Totally agree- the reason I included the original was not for comparison purposes and (as you said) not necessarily for comments, but to provide some insight into why I chose to use a filter on the image and how it modified the original. I prefer the photo with the filter, but it may not be liked by everyone. That's fine- its a form of artistic expression and everyone has their own tastes. And, I agree with the suggestion about cropping. Thanks.

86 Jul 22 Comment Hi Ruth, I'm glad you brought that up. A list of apps can be good, but I'm not sure if that's the purpose of this particular study group. Most members seem to be posting traditional photos and aren't using the iphone's other capabilities (live photo/long exposure, panos, etc.)- or other creative apps that are available for shooting and editing. That may be related to the individual's experience or personal preference, or both. I think most comments are traditional in nature also (e.g. cropping, lighting, etc., all of which are important and shouldn't be overlooked). I may be opening a can of worms with the apps and maybe that's not the purpose of this particular study group. Maybe this study group is just to get more experience using the phone for traditional photography (in place of a regular camera when appropriate). Maybe it's both, but I'm not sure. I'm new to PSA so I'm not sure if there are courses that are offered on this topic as well. Maybe Jack can clarify purpose and direction. Jul 13th
86 Jul 22 Comment Great seascape shot! Really like the leading lines of the waves and clouds that converge together and lead my eye through the picture. I also like the sense of scale created by including the person in the distance. The picture is sharp throughout. Nice capture! Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Comment Very nice landscape shot Jack1 Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Comment Very sharp portrait. Love the eye contact! Just curious whether you shot this in portrait mode or not because the foreground and background seem slightly out of focus (which I think is good). The only thing that might be a little distracting is the white background in the upper left of the picture, but that's up to you. There are lots of ways to darken it or increase the bokeh using lightroom (masking tool) or other apps (e.g. focos) if you chose to. Also, when I shoot in portrait mode I sometimes use the lighting options after the picture is taken to remove distractions (not sure it would apply in this case though). Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Comment Gene- I've seen pretty good detail, tone and color compared to "regular cameras" using the macro lens on the new 13 pro (not sure what iphone camera you have). The 1X camera (26 mm) on the 13 focuses great between about 2-10 inches away and the macro lens (13 mm) can focus as close as 1/2 inch (or even less) to about 2 inches away from your subject. Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Comment Quang Phan- I like the use of the vertical pano in this case, I think it works perfectly. Usually, I'd want to try and straighten the keystoning effect you're getting (by the wide angle and pointing the camera up), but I think it kind of works in this picture because of the curved structures on the ceiling (that's a personal taste). Tone and color is balanced nicely. Ditto to Jack's suggestion about the foreground crop. Nicely done. Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Reply Thanks Jack- 100% agree about the original image not being that compelling. What I like (and am trying to say) about using some of these iphone apps and filters are their ease of use (sometimes one click) as compared to many desktop programs like photoshop and topaz (programs that I use also, but are much more time consuming and complicated). This picture was edited on my iphone in a minute or two (no transfer to desktop). Of course traditional photographic principles still apply (e.g. choice of subject, framing, lighting, composition, etc.). Jul 9th
86 Jul 22 Comment Hi Quang,

Thanks for your comments. You astutely found several things that were missing or changed from the original, unedited photo. I'm sure you can see that when an app like this is used, reality is definitely altered and the before picture is drastically different from the edited version (If you didn't have the before, you might not have seen all the differences). You may not like the particular filter and the effect it created and that's fine (we all have different likes). In my humble opinion it's hard to evaluate these types of images (with filters or special effects) using traditional evaluation techniques. I definitely would not submit this to a competition (I know it wouldn't score well). But, I love the iphone because it has allowed me to explore my creative side more easily (than traditional photography, which I still do alot).
